Tranquilised tigress to be brought from Bihar for Buxa tiger reintroduction

Haimara, Sep 29 (UNI) Forest officials on Tuesday successfully tranquilised a tigress at Bihar’s Valmiki Tiger Reserve, paving the way for its proposed reintroduction in West Bengal’s Buxa Tiger Reserve in Alipurduar district.
West Bengal Forest Minister Manoj Kumar Oraon said on Tuesday evening that the tigress was tranquilised after forest officials made repeated attempts over the past seven days. The animal was among three tigresses shortlisted by experts for the reintroduction programme.
According to the minister, the process of safely securing and caging the tigress has already started. It is proposed to be airlifted by a special helicopter from Valmiki Tiger Reserve to Hasimara Air Force Station and then taken to Buxa Tiger Reserve. The animal may reach Buxa on Tuesday night if weather conditions permit. Otherwise, it will be brought on Wednesday morning.
The proposed release of the tigress in Buxa is scheduled for October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, around 9 am to 9.30 am. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari is scheduled to release the animal.
The Forest Department has already made extensive preparations inside Buxa Tiger Reserve for the reintroduction programme. An enclosure has been set up and a number of herbivores, including deer, have been released to strengthen the prey base. Three trained elephants have also been brought in to assist officials in monitoring the animal.
The reintroduction programme is aimed at restoring a breeding population of tigers in Buxa. A tiger was recorded by a trap camera in Buxa in 2022, but it was believed to be a transient animal moving through the reserve from Bhutan and Assam.
Oraon said the department plans to introduce one or two more big cats in subsequent phases to establish a viable tiger population in Buxa. The move is also expected to strengthen wildlife tourism in the region.
The minister appealed to the people of Alipurduar and residents living in the core areas of Buxa to extend cooperation to the Forest Department. He said rehabilitation measures were already being undertaken for families residing in the core area.
To enable people to witness the historic release, the Forest Department will arrange a giant-screen programme at the Parade Ground in Alipurduar. The Chief Minister is expected to address the gathering there.
Meanwhile, jungle safari and other tourism activities in Buxa Tiger Reserve will remain suspended from September 30 to October 3 as part of security and operational arrangements for the reintroduction programme. UNI MBN NST
