I can do without pleasure, but not peace of mind: Shilpa Shetty

Bengaluru, Sep 24 (UNI) “I can do without pleasure, but I can't do without peace of mind” — actress and entrepreneur Shilpa Shetty's take on happiness is rooted in a simple principle: being fully present, whether she is on a film set, spending time with her children or enjoying an apple plucked fresh from a tree.
Speaking at Happy AiR World 3 Ps Happpiness Summit 2026 here, Shetty said the pursuit of pleasure alone could not provide lasting happiness, as pleasure was temporary and could become a source of pain when people became overly dependent on it.
“I can do without pleasure, but I can't do without peace of mind,” she said, stressing that being at peace with oneself was essential to happiness.
Linking the idea to her experience as an actress, Shetty said she tries to be completely present while shooting a film, keeping other concerns aside instead of allowing work, family and other responsibilities to overlap.
“When I am at an event, I am 100 per cent there,” she said, explaining that she follows the same approach at home, where she tries to give her children her undivided attention.
For Shetty, being present also means finding happiness in seemingly ordinary experiences. Recalling a visit to Shimla, she said seeing apple trees, touching the fruit, plucking an apple and eating it fresh gave her a sense of happiness because she was completely immersed in the experience.
She said the moment was more than the pleasure of eating an apple — it was about being present and appreciating the experience.
“Happiness is being in the moment. Just enjoying the moment,” she said.
Shetty said modern life often prevents people from experiencing such moments, with work calls, phones and other distractions intruding into meals, family time and even conversations.
“When you are eating, switch off. Only look at the food with gratitude. Chew it, enjoy it, be in that moment,” she said.
She also stressed the importance of purpose, saying people could enjoy pleasure but should not make it the sole objective of life.
“Your sense of purpose is what will determine your happiness quotient,” she said.
For Shetty, therefore, happiness is less about chasing the next pleasurable experience and more about protecting peace of mind and giving one's full attention to the moment at hand — whether it is a day of film shooting, time with family or simply biting into a freshly picked apple.
