Four-storey building in Seemapuri collapses: Eight rescued as search for trapped people continues

New Delhi, Oct 7 (UNI) A four-storey building in Delhi’s Seemapuri area collapsed on Wednesday afternoon, with several people feared trapped under the debris, officials said.
According to officials the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), besides the collapsed building, the adjoining building was also damaged, and the boundary wall of a nearby mosque also collapsed due to the impact of the incident.
Delhi Fire Services reached the spot following a PCR call about the collapse of the residential building at around 3:30 pm.
An official noted that four fire tenders arrived at the accident site, carrying out the search and rescue operation as some people were reported to be trapped under the rubble.
In a statement, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) said that no casualties were reported during the incident.
A total of eight people rescued were sent to the hospital, with search operations in progress, it added.
Locals said they managed to save their family members, pulling them out of the debris, while noting that several others might still be trapped.
“My daughter and son-in-law were trapped inside the building, and were later rescued,” said Salim, a resident of the building. He added that two children have also been rescued while stating that efforts are ongoing to remove three others still trapped under the rubble with the aid of cranes.
Speaking to the media about the total occupants of the building, Salim added that nearly 15-20 people resided in the building, with at least 12 people still feared trapped under the debris.
He claimed the collapse happened following last night’s earthquake, which caused some cracks in the building. Several residents had vacated the premises, with few others moving out when the mishap took place, Salim said.
Wednesday’s mishap drew attention to incongruent claims over the building's age.
While the resident claimed it was a new building, the civic body stated the building to be over 20 years. In a statement, MCD said the building was occupied and 20-25 years old.
The collapse comes a month after a boys' PG in Delhi's Satya Niketan collapsed on September 6 while repair work was underway. Seven people, mostly students, were killed and several others were injured in the incident.
Since the Satya Niketan incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been conducting enforcement drives against dangerous buildings, unauthorised constructions and violations of the Master Plan of Delhi (MPD) and building bye-laws.
According to a report, the civic body carried out demolition drives in several areas on Tuesday, including Old Seemapuri.
