Cleanliness must become daily habit, shared responsibility: Delhi CM

New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday urged residents to make cleanliness a daily habit rather than restrict it to government campaigns, as she joined students, teachers and residents in a cleanliness drive at Kamla Nehru Ridge under the ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Abhiyan 2026’.
Participating in the nationwide ‘Ek Din, Ek Ghanta, Ek Saath’ cleanliness drive, Gupta said maintaining public spaces could not be the sole responsibility of civic agencies and required sustained participation from citizens.
“Cleanliness should not be limited to a single day or a particular campaign, but should become a regular habit and a collective responsibility,” she said.
The Chief Minister said thousands of people across Delhi participated in cleanliness and other service activities between 8 am and 9 am, the campaign's designated period. She said citizens should recognise the impact of littering on public spaces and the environment and develop greater sensitivity towards keeping their surroundings clean.
Gupta said sanitation workers and civic agencies must ensure regular cleaning, but residents also have a responsibility to prevent littering after an area has been cleaned. “Both the administration and citizens must play their respective roles to make the cleanliness system effective,” she said.
She also highlighted the participation of Delhi University students and teachers in the drive, saying young people could play an important role in expanding such initiatives into wider public movements. She appealed to residents to make the cleanliness of roads, lanes, parks, markets, and other public spaces part of their everyday routine.
Meanwhile, a separate cleanliness drive was conducted by the 103 RAF Battalion at Pushpanjali School in Tukmirpur, with Cabinet Minister Kapil Mishra, local public representatives, RAF personnel, residents and school students participating.
Mishra said the 103 RAF Battalion organises such drives annually in collaboration with local residents and students. He said the initiative reflected the social responsibility of the security personnel beyond their regular duties.
According to Mishra, a cleanliness campaign was conducted at around 300 locations across Delhi on Thursday, with ministers, MLAs, councillors, public representatives and residents participating in activities in their respective areas.
He said cleanliness should be treated as a social responsibility and not remain limited to periodic campaigns. He called for continued coordination among the government, security forces, local representatives, and citizens to maintain public spaces.
The programmes were held as part of ‘Swachhta Hi Seva 2026’ and the Seva Sankalp Abhiyan. Gupta said the impact of the one-hour cleanliness drive would depend on whether it translated into regular civic practices throughout the year.
