MCD to deploy 70 road-sweeping machines to curb winter dust pollution

New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) From mid-November, when winter pollution peaks in Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) will deploy 70 new mechanised road-sweeping machines (MSRM) across the city, according to an official statement.
The fleet, imported from Europe, comprises 55 electric and 15 CNG-powered machines. On Thursday, MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, inspected the field trials of new machines, the statement said. Delhi government airlifted the machines to Delhi for field trials using funds from the state Environment Department.
The self-propelled machines have sweeping capacities of 2 cubic metres and 4 cubic metres. MCD claimed that the imported machines equipped with an additional third front brush have improved sweeping efficiency and are more effective in dust and road debris removal.
Delhi’s current MSRM count stands at 52, and collectively sweeps 1200 km of roads in the city. According to a recent study conducted by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), a Delhi-based Climate think tank, these machines together benefit only 18 per cent of the city's population.
The study highlighted that 42 per cent of the existing coverage is concentrated in residential areas, while commercial zones, where higher traffic density contributes to greater dust resuspension, remain relatively underserved.
Experts in the study noted that the expanded fleet operated under the same logic as the existing 52 machines may not deliver optimal improvement in curbing dust pollution, which is one of the major contributors to Delhi’s winter pollution crisis.
