Delhi Police asks protest-covering journalists to display IDs, keep safe distance

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) The Delhi Police has issued a set of guidelines for journalists covering protests in the capital, asking them to prominently display their identification cards, avoid interfering with police operations and maintain a safe distance from tense situations.
The advisory comes amid questions over the conduct and identification of police personnel deployed to manage recent demonstrations, with allegations also emerging of women journalists being allegedly manhandled or harassed during protest coverage.
Sharing the guidelines on X on Monday, the Delhi Police said: “The story matters, so does how you get it!”
Under the advisory, journalists assigned to protest coverage have been asked to carry valid identity cards issued by their respective media organisations or accreditation cards issued by the Press Information Bureau (PIB) or Delhi Information and Publicity (DIP) department.
The police have also asked journalists to keep their credentials clearly visible while reporting from protest sites to enable law enforcement personnel to distinguish them from demonstrators.
The guidelines further state that media personnel should ensure that their movements or professional activities do not hamper police operations or obstruct the movement of law enforcement personnel deployed at the spot.
In situations that turn tense, journalists have been advised to maintain a reasonable and safe distance while recording or reporting the proceedings. They have also been asked to position themselves in a way that makes it clear that they are part of the media and not the protesting crowd.
The advisory assumes significance against the backdrop of recent demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, including protests linked to the anti-NEET agitation by the Cockroach Janta Party and demonstrations seeking the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Videos and reports emerging from some of these protests have also raised questions over whether police personnel deployed for crowd control were wearing visible identification or name tags. In some footage, protesters were seen questioning officers over the absence of identification details.
The Delhi Police, however, has denied issuing any direction to its personnel to remove or conceal their nameplates. UNI PWS SS
