Delhi Speaker Vijender Gupta attends Commonwealth Workshop on Human Rights, Peace

New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Wednesday participated in a workshop on human rights and peace at the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, where parliamentarians deliberated on the role of legislatures in protecting human rights and promoting peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The workshop, titled "Protecting Human Rights and Promoting Peace: The Role of Parliaments", focused on the responsibilities of parliaments in safeguarding human rights, strengthening parliamentary oversight and upholding international humanitarian law.
The discussions also examined the role of legislatures in supporting peaceful mechanisms for resolving conflicts, highlighting the importance of parliamentary institutions in promoting dialogue, accountability and respect for human rights.
During his participation in the conference, Gupta also met Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Secretary General Stephen Twigg and presented him with three publications highlighting important chapters of India's parliamentary, constitutional and political history.
The publications included Ek Shatabdi Yatra: Shri Vithalbhai Patel, which traces the parliamentary legacy of Vithalbhai Patel; 370: Undoing the Unjust: A New Future for J&K, examining the abrogation of Article 370 and subsequent political and constitutional developments; and Proceedings of the War Conference Held at Delhi, 27th–29th April 1918.
The exchange formed part of discussions on parliamentary heritage and cooperation among Commonwealth legislatures, according to the Delhi Assembly Secretariat.
Gupta's participation comes as the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference brings together legislators and parliamentary representatives from across the Commonwealth to deliberate on issues concerning parliamentary democracy, governance, human rights and institutional cooperation. UNI PWS SAS

CJP protest: SC declines to reconstitute Justice Reddy-led panel probing July violence

New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) The Supreme Court has declined to reconstitute the five-member High-Powered Enquiry Committee (HPEC) headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy, which was set up on August 18, 2026, to probe allegations of police excesses during the July 20 crackdown on student protesters at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and elsewhere in the country. The protesters, mobilised by the Cockroach Janata Party, were demanding the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged question-paper leaks in NEET and other examinations.
