Massive turnout at Delhi rally reflects public anger against BJP govt, claims Selja

New Delhi, Nov 1(UNI) Congress general secretary and Sirsa MP Kumari Selja on Sunday said the large turnout at the party's 'Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao' rally in Delhi reflected growing public anger against the BJP-led central government and its policies.
Selja accused the Centre of weakening constitutional institutions and attempting to suppress opposition voices, saying the Congress would continue its campaign to protect democracy, the Constitution and citizens' voting rights.
"The massive public participation in the rally is a clear indication of growing resentment against the policies of the BJP government. The struggle to protect democracy and the Constitution will continue," Selja said in a statement.
The former union minister thanked Congress workers, supporters and citizens who travelled from Haryana, Uttarakhand and other states to participate in the rally at Ramlila Maidan.
She alleged that the opposition was being denied adequate opportunities to raise important national issues in Parliament and that the government was increasingly intolerant of political dissent.
Selja also questioned the functioning of the Election Commission, saying concerns raised by opposition parties over the Chief Election Commissioner's role required transparent answers.
"The independence and impartiality of constitutional institutions are fundamental to democracy. The government must respond transparently to the questions being raised about the electoral process," she said.
The Congress leader alleged that the BJP government's defence of the Chief Election Commissioner exposed its double standards.
She said the Congress and the INDIA bloc were fighting not against any individual but to safeguard constitutional principles, electoral integrity and the voting rights of every citizen.
Raising concerns over restrictions on political demonstrations, Selja said peaceful protest was a democratic right, and police and administrative machinery should not be used to silence dissent.
"The voice of the people cannot be suppressed through the use of police and administrative power," she said.
Selja said the message of the Delhi rally would be taken to villages and households across the country as part of the Congress campaign for electoral accountability and constitutional safeguards.
The BJP has rejected the opposition's allegations of electoral manipulation, while the Election Commission has maintained that its decisions follow established legal procedures.
The rally's venue and campaign context were independently reported. Selja's remarks and claims about turnout are attributed to her supplied statement; no independently verified crowd estimate is available.
