Cleaner Yamuna in Delhi means cleaner Ganga for the nation: LG Sandhu

New Delhi, Nov 1 (UNI) Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Sandhu has underscored the importance of protecting India’s rivers, saying that a cleaner Yamuna in Delhi is essential to ensuring a cleaner Ganga for the entire nation.
Addressing students at the annual day event of a Delhi school, Sandhu highlighted the Ganga’s unique place in India’s civilisational heritage, noting that the river finds expression in the country’s scriptures, poetry, music, art and spiritual traditions.
He said the banks of the Ganga have, for centuries, been home to centres of learning, pilgrimage and cultural exchange. The river has sustained communities, supported livelihoods and shaped settlements, stretching from the Himalayas to the plains.
However, the Lieutenant Governor emphasised that the Ganga is not merely a symbol of history, mythology or spirituality; it also serves as a reminder of society’s responsibility towards nature and environmental conservation.
Drawing a connection between the Ganga and Delhi, Sandhu told students that although the Ganga may appear geographically distant, it is closely linked to the capital through the Yamuna. The Yamuna basin accounts for nearly 40 per cent of the Ganga basin, and the two rivers meet at the Sangam in Prayagraj.
Highlighting the extent of pollution in the Yamuna, he pointed out that its 22-kilometre stretch in Delhi, which constitutes less than two per cent of the river’s total length, accounts for approximately 76 per cent of its pollution.
“An Aviral and Nirmal Ganga is possible only with an Aviral and Nirmal Yamuna,” he said, stressing that the health of the two rivers is intrinsically connected.
Urging students to become active participants in river conservation, Sandhu called on them to adopt simple yet meaningful practices, such as refraining from throwing plastic and puja materials into rivers and spreading awareness among their families and friends.
He said that keeping the Yamuna clean in Delhi would contribute directly to the larger national mission of restoring the Ganga.
The Lieutenant Governor further stressed that reverence for the holy Ganga, worshipped as ‘Maa Ganga’, must be reflected in concrete action through river conservation, responsible water use and the protection of natural ecosystems that sustain life.
Recalling the Prime Minister’s message that keeping Ganga clean is a big responsibility of all, he said the call brings together reverence for the river and duty towards future generations.UNI APS AAB
