Delhi Assembly pays tribute to Vithalbhai Patel, Bhagat Singh

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) The Delhi Assembly on Sunday paid floral tributes to freedom fighter and former Central Legislative Assembly president Vithalbhai Jhaverbhai Patel and revolutionary Bhagat Singh on their birth anniversaries, highlighting their contributions to India's parliamentary history and freedom struggle.
Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht and officials of the Delhi Legislative Assembly Secretariat paid tributes to the two leaders at the historic Assembly premises.
Bisht said the Delhi Assembly premises were closely linked to both the development of India's legislative institutions and the freedom movement. He said Patel represented the institutional side of the struggle, while Bhagat Singh became a symbol of resistance to British rule.
Patel became the first Indian to be elected president, or Speaker, of the Central Legislative Assembly on August 24, 1925. The legislature functioned from the premises that now house the Delhi Assembly. During his tenure, Patel sought to safeguard the independence and dignity of the Speaker's office, members' rights and privileges and the autonomy of the legislative secretariat.
The Assembly also recalled Bhagat Singh's association with the premises. On April 8, 1929, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly as a protest against colonial legislation. They were subsequently arrested and used the proceedings of their trial to publicise their political message.
Bisht said the two leaders represented different forms of resistance during the freedom struggle and that their association with the Assembly underscored the connection between India's legislative heritage and the independence movement.
The tributes were held on the birth anniversaries of the two leaders, with Patel's 153rd and Singh's 119th birth anniversaries being observed this year.
