Army celebrates 200th Gunners’ Day, honours artillery martyrs

New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) The Indian Army on Monday celebrated the 200th Gunners’ Day, marking the historic legacy of the Regiment of Artillery, which has played a crucial role in the Army’s combat operations through its precision firepower, battlefield support and technological transformation.
The occasion was marked by a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial in the national capital, where Lieutenant General Anoop Shinghal, Director General Artillery and Colonel Commandant, accompanied by serving personnel and veterans, paid homage to the bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation.
The ceremony honoured the courage, sacrifice and distinguished legacy of the Gunners on behalf of all ranks of the Regiment of Artillery.
Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth and all ranks of the Indian Army extended greetings and best wishes to the personnel, veterans, and families of the Regiment of Artillery on the occasion.
In his message, the Army Chief said the Gunners, with their precision, firepower, and unwavering commitment to mission accomplishment, remained a formidable force on the battlefield, serving with pride and upholding the motto of Sarvatra Izzat-O-Iqbal.
September 28 holds special significance in the history of the Regiment of Artillery as 5 (Bombay) Mountain Battery was raised on this day in 1827. Since the unit has remained in uninterrupted service, its Raising Day is commemorated annually as Gunners’ Day.
This year’s celebration marks 200 years of the Regiment’s legacy, reflecting its evolution from traditional artillery formations to a modern, technology-driven arm capable of delivering accurate and responsive firepower across diverse operational environments.
Over the years, the Regiment has evolved from conventional guns and mountain artillery to a diverse inventory of weapon systems, including towed and self-propelled artillery guns, multi-barrel rocket launchers, missiles and precision-guided munitions.
The Regiment's operational responsibilities include delivering firepower against enemy positions, supporting offensive and defensive operations, countering hostile artillery, and providing responsive fire support to troops deployed across varied terrain.
The Regiment of Artillery played a significant role in Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, 2025, following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people.
During the operation, Indian forces targeted nine terrorist infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The initial strikes were described by the government as focused, measured and non-escalatory.
Artillery's contribution extended beyond conventional battlefield fire support, demonstrating the role of precision weapons in contemporary military operations. The Army's artillery formations were assigned seven of the nine targets, with a majority of these struck using precision long-range Excalibur artillery rounds and loitering munitions.
The operation also involved artillery engagements along the Line of Control, where Pakistan resorted to heavy-calibre artillery and mortar fire in several sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. India responded with artillery fire to counter the attacks and bring the shelling to a halt, according to official statements.
