India-Mongolia military exercise gains momentum in Pithoragarh

New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI) The 18th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise Nomadic Elephant 2026 is progressing with intensive training activities in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh, focusing on enhancing tactical proficiency, interoperability and mutual understanding between the two armies.
The exercise, being conducted at the Foreign Training Node from September 21 to October 3, brings together 45 personnel each from the Indian Army and the Mongolian Armed Forces.
As part of the ongoing training, Mongolian troops underwent weapon handling and firing sessions, covering weapon familiarisation, safety drills, loading and unloading procedures, aiming techniques and firing practices.
The practical sessions were aimed at strengthening their familiarity with small arms while reinforcing safe and disciplined weapon handling.
The Indian Army contingent also demonstrated room intervention drills, highlighting the procedures involved in operations in built-up areas, including systematic entry, room clearance, coordinated movement, communication, fire discipline and casualty evacuation.
Mongolian personnel subsequently joined their Indian counterparts for hands-on training, providing an opportunity to exchange operational practices and enhance tactical-level coordination.
The exercise also witnessed a display of Mongolia's traditional martial arts, with Mongolian Armed Forces personnel demonstrating Mongolian Classical Wrestling, known as Bökh, and unarmed combat techniques.
The demonstrations featured traditional wrestling techniques, controlled grappling and close-combat movements, showcasing the strength, agility and discipline associated with Mongolia's martial heritage.
The activities also provided an opportunity for professional interaction and mutual learning between the two contingents, strengthening camaraderie among the participating troops.
Exercise Nomadic Elephant 2026 aims to enhance the joint military capabilities of India and Mongolia for counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain under a United Nations mandate.
The progressive training activities are enabling both contingents to refine tactical drills, exchange best practices and develop greater interoperability in realistic operational scenarios.
The exercise is part of the longstanding defence cooperation between India and Mongolia, reflecting the commitment of the two countries to strengthen military ties, mutual trust and friendship.UNI PWS AAB
