PM Modi to unveil Rs 21,800-crore Pune metro expansion, Pink Line to link Hinjewadi with Shivajinagar

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of Pune Metro projects worth around Rs 21,800 crore on November 3, marking a major push towards expanding the city's mass rapid transit network and strengthening connectivity between its rapidly growing residential, commercial and information technology hubs.
The PM will inaugurate Pune Metro Line 3, popularly known as the Pink Line, built at a cost of more than Rs 8,300 crore, and lay the foundation stone for the second phase of Pune Metro, involving an estimated investment of around Rs 13,500 crore. The programme will be held through video conferencing at 12.30 pm, the Prime Minister's Office said on Monday. Modi will also address the gathering.
The inauguration of the 23-km Pink Line, connecting Maan in the Hinjewadi IT hub with the District Court Metro station at Shivajinagar, is expected to significantly improve connectivity between two of Pune's important employment and commercial centres. The corridor is expected to benefit thousands of IT professionals and other commuters who travel daily between Hinjewadi and different parts of the city, while reducing dependence on private vehicles.
The new line will be integrated with the existing Pune Metro network through interchange facilities, allowing passengers to access a wider network of destinations. Besides easing congestion on some of the city's busiest roads, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time, lower vehicular emissions and provide a more efficient and reliable public transport alternative.
A distinctive feature of the Pink Line will be its emphasis on women's participation in public transport operations. The entire corridor will be operated by women train operators, making it a first-of-its-kind initiative. The project also incorporates measures to promote environmental sustainability, with approximately 30 per cent of its electricity requirements envisaged to be met through solar power.
Alongside the inauguration, Modi will launch the next stage of Pune's Metro expansion by laying the foundation stone for four corridors under Phase II — Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A. Together, these corridors are intended to extend Metro connectivity to important residential neighbourhoods, commercial districts and emerging IT destinations, while strengthening integration with the existing network.

Under Phase II, Lines 2A and 2B will together cover approximately 12.75 km. Line 2A will connect Vanaz with Chandani Chowk, while Line 2B will extend from Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi, improving east-west connectivity and bringing additional residential and commercial areas within the reach of the Metro system.
Line 4, spanning approximately 25.52 km, will connect Kharadi with Khadakwasla, while Line 4A, extending 6.12 km, will link Nal Stop with Manik Baug. The proposed expansion will bring several important locations, including Kharadi, Magarpatta, Hadapsar, Swargate, Manik Baug, Nanded City, Pune Cantonment and Warje, into a more comprehensive urban transport network.
The eastern extension from Ramwadi to Vitthalwadi is expected to be particularly significant for the rapidly expanding residential and commercial areas of Kharadi and Wagholi, which have emerged as major growth centres driven by the IT and services sectors. Improved Metro connectivity is expected to make daily commuting easier for residents and employees while providing an alternative to increasingly congested roads.
The proposed corridors will also be integrated with the existing Pune Metro system and intercity bus services through interchange facilities at Swargate, Nal Stop and Kharadi Bypass. The integrated transport arrangements are aimed at facilitating seamless transfers between different modes of public transport and improving connectivity within Pune as well as with destinations beyond the city.
Pune, one of Maharashtra's fastest-growing urban centres and a major hub for information technology, manufacturing and education, has witnessed mounting pressure on its road infrastructure amid rapid urbanisation, rising vehicle ownership and expanding economic activity. The growing concentration of employment opportunities in areas such as Hinjewadi and Kharadi has further increased the demand for efficient public transport.
The expansion of the Metro network is expected to address some of these challenges by providing a faster and more sustainable commuting option, improving access to employment centres and residential areas and reducing the burden on the city's road network.
With the inauguration of the Pink Line and the launch of the second-phase expansion, the government is seeking to accelerate the development of an integrated mass rapid transit system for Pune. The projects are expected to significantly increase public transport capacity, improve urban mobility and support the city's expanding population and economic requirements.
