PM Modi pitches household solar revolution, says Clean Energy Holds Key to Future Security

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called for a fresh wave of innovation in renewable energy, urging India's startups, IITs, entrepreneurs and scientific community to develop affordable solar solutions capable of meeting a substantial portion of household energy requirements, asserting that clean energy would be central to India's future energy security.
Inaugurating the four-day Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Modi said the continuing geopolitical uncertainties, particularly the crisis in West Asia, had underlined the need for countries to strengthen their energy security and accelerate the transition towards sustainable sources of power.
Referring to the unprecedented disruptions faced by the global economy in recent years, beginning with the Covid-19 pandemic and extending to the ongoing West Asia crisis, the Prime Minister said India had demonstrated resilience in navigating these challenges while sustaining a high rate of economic growth.
"Over the past few years, the global economy has witnessed unprecedented crises. From the Covid-19 pandemic to the West Asia crisis, the world has faced several major challenges. The West Asia crisis is still continuing, but 1.4 billion Indians can take pride in the fact that we have managed this crisis better so far and that India's growth has remained high despite these challenges," he said.
Declaring that "the future of energy security lies in clean energy", Modi emphasised that India's renewable energy ambitions must go beyond expanding generation capacity and focus increasingly on technological innovation, research and the development of solutions that directly benefit ordinary households.
He said the next phase of India's solar revolution should not be confined to wider adoption of existing technologies but must be driven by new ideas and innovative models. Specifically urging startups, IITs, innovators and entrepreneurs to take up the challenge, he called for solutions through which families could meet the maximum possible share of their electricity requirements through solar power.
"This new phase of the solar revolution is not just about adoption; it also depends on innovation. I would particularly urge our startups, IITs, innovators and entrepreneurs to come forward and develop models through which a family's maximum possible requirements can be met through solar power," Modi said.
The Prime Minister's emphasis on household-level solar solutions comes as India seeks to combine its renewable energy expansion with greater domestic manufacturing, technological self-reliance and reduced dependence on conventional energy sources. The volatility of international energy markets and disruptions arising from geopolitical conflicts have further strengthened the case for diversifying energy supplies and developing indigenous clean energy capabilities.
The Bharat Renewable Energy Summit, being held from November 2 to 5 under the theme 'Invest. Innovate. Inspire.', has brought together representatives from more than 130 countries, including over 40 ministers, alongside policymakers, investors, financial institutions, technology providers and industry leaders. The event is aimed at mobilising investments, promoting technology partnerships and strengthening international cooperation across the renewable energy value chain.
Nine country and regional partners — Australia, Denmark, the European Union, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom — are participating in the summit, reflecting the growing international engagement with India's clean energy sector.
Thirteen States and union Territories — Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal — are also showcasing their renewable energy potential, manufacturing strengths and investment opportunities. Their participation is intended to connect international investors and technology companies with projects and emerging opportunities across different regions of the country.
The summit is being organised alongside two other major international clean energy gatherings — the ninth session of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) Assembly and the fourth International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH). The three parallel engagements are designed to address complementary dimensions of the global transition towards sustainable energy systems.
While Bharat RE 2026 focuses primarily on investment, industrial participation, domestic manufacturing and technological partnerships across the renewable energy sector, the ISA Assembly is expected to advance international cooperation in solar power, including financing, institutional capacity and wider deployment. The green hydrogen conference, meanwhile, provides a platform for deliberations on emerging technologies, investment prospects and strategies to expand the production and use of green hydrogen.
Building on the experience of RE-INVEST, India's flagship renewable energy investment summit, Bharat RE 2026 seeks to widen the country's engagement with global investors, manufacturers and clean energy technology providers. Its programme includes plenary sessions, ministerial-level discussions, chief executive officer roundtables and country- and state-specific deliberations, besides business-to-business, business-to-government and government-to-government engagements.
A major objective is to translate policy discussions and international partnerships into concrete investment commitments, collaborative ventures and viable projects.
The accompanying exhibition features more than 400 exhibitors showcasing advanced technologies, Indian manufacturing capabilities and solutions across the renewable energy ecosystem. The exhibits cover solar and wind power, green hydrogen, energy storage and other emerging clean energy technologies, offering domestic manufacturers and international companies opportunities to display innovations and explore commercial partnerships.
India's renewable energy expansion has increasingly emerged as a central component of its broader economic and energy security strategy. Alongside adding clean power generation capacity, the country is seeking to strengthen its domestic manufacturing ecosystem, promote research and development, improve energy storage infrastructure and attract international capital and technological expertise.
The geopolitical uncertainties confronting the global economy have reinforced the urgency of reducing dependence on vulnerable international supply chains and conventional energy sources. Modi's call for household-oriented solar innovation therefore places technological development and wider public participation alongside large-scale investments and industrial expansion in India's clean energy transition.
With representatives from more than 130 countries, over 40 ministers, upwards of 400 exhibitors and three major international platforms converging in New Delhi, Bharat RE 2026 is expected to provide a significant forum for advancing discussions on investment, technology transfer, manufacturing and international cooperation. The larger test, however, will lie in converting the summit's deliberations and partnerships into commercially viable projects, affordable technologies and reliable clean energy access for households and businesses.
