Delhi hosts annual RMS conference, Best School trophy instituted in Salaria’s honour

New Delhi, Sep 16 (UNI) The Annual Principals’ and Administrative Officers’ Conference of the Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) was held at Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi, bringing together senior military leadership, school heads, administrative officers and distinguished alumni to review institutional progress and deliberate on ways to strengthen academics, leadership, discipline and holistic development of cadets.
The conference was chaired by Lieutenant General Vipul Shinghal, Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Information Systems and Training). Distinguished RMS alumni Ashok Lavasa, IAS (Retd), and Lieutenant General S.N. Handa (Retd) attended the conference as Guests of Honour.
A major highlight of the conference was the institution of the Best RMS Trophy in honour of Captain Gurbachan Singh Salaria, Param Vir Chakra, to recognise overall institutional excellence among the Rashtriya Military Schools. An alumnus of Rashtriya Military School Bengaluru, Salaria was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his actions during the United Nations operation in Congo in December 1961. He led a small force of Gorkhas against a numerically superior enemy and was mortally wounded during the action. His conduct is remembered as an example of leadership, courage, and sacrifice.
The new award is aimed at reinforcing the core ethos of the RMS system, with emphasis on character building, discipline, leadership and preparing young cadets for service to the nation. The conference also provided a platform for the participating schools to review their institutional practices and share experiences in areas including academics, leadership development, discipline and the overall grooming of cadets.
The focus on holistic development reflects the distinctive role of the RMS system, which combines formal school education with residential training and an environment designed to inculcate discipline, teamwork, leadership and a sense of responsibility.
The Rashtriya Military Schools, functioning under the Ministry of Defence, are among India's oldest residential public schools. The schools trace their origins to the King George's Royal Indian Military Schools, with the first institutions beginning to function in the 1920s. The RMS system was subsequently reorganised on public-school lines in 1952, while admissions were opened beyond the original defence-service clientele. The schools were renamed Military Schools in 1966 and acquired their present designation, Rashtriya Military School, in 2007.
There are currently five Rashtriya Military Schools: Chail in Himachal Pradesh, Ajmer and Dholpur in Rajasthan, and Belgaum and Bengaluru in Karnataka. They are fully residential, CBSE-affiliated institutions under the Ministry of Defence.
