Cong questions SIR hurdle for young voters as EC announces special enrolment camps

New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI) Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh has accused the Election Commission of India of creating an “illegal and unconstitutional” hurdle for young and first-time voters through an additional declaration linked to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), even as the poll panel has ordered special enrolment camps to facilitate registration of young electors.
In a post on social media platform X on Saturday, Ramesh said the Election Commission had “panicked” and directed officials to organise special enrolment camps for young voters and publicise them widely through social media.
He, however, alleged that the poll panel had itself created difficulties for first-time voters by introducing an additional requirement linked to the previous SIR exercise.
