DUSU Polls: ABVP, NSUI, AISA-SFI battle for top posts

New Delhi, Sep 18 (UNI) Voting for the Delhi University Students’ union (DUSU) elections was held on Friday with students casting ballots in two shifts, as 20 candidates from major student organisations vie for the four key central panel posts amid heightened scrutiny over poll conduct.
Polling for students attending day classes was conducted from 8.30 am to 1 pm, while those enrolled in evening classes voted from 3 pm to 7.30 pm.
Around 36 per cent turnout was recorded in the first phase, according to officials.
Last year, voting across most Delhi University colleges stood at about 39.45 per cent.
The election covers the posts of president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary, besides various college representative positions.
Counting of votes is scheduled for September 19 at the Multipurpose Hall of the University Sports Stadium in North Campus.
The main contest is among the RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Congress-backed National Students’ union of India (NSUI), and the Left-backed AISA-SFI alliance.
The university has deployed 1,000 electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the elections. Of these, 960 are being used for polling, while 40 have been kept as reserve machines, university officials said.
The election process has also come under the scrutiny of the Delhi High Court, which on Friday directed that no victory procession be taken out after the results are announced.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia also asked student organisations and candidates to explain why electoral damages should not be imposed over alleged violations of the norms governing DUSU elections.
The court said it had taken note of what it described as frequent violations of the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee by students, candidates and student organisations.
“Having noted frequent violations on the part of the students, candidates and student organisations, we propose to impose collective damages not only on the students found violating the norms but also the student organisations,” the Bench observed.
The court specifically barred candidates, supporters and student groups from taking out victory processions after the results, both on Delhi roads and within university campuses and hostels.
It placed responsibility on Delhi Police to enforce the direction and said violations could invite criminal and administrative action as well as contempt proceedings.
The Bench also directed Delhi Police to take the criminal cases already initiated in connection with alleged poll-related violations to their logical conclusion.
Police informed the court that FIRs had been registered and some students arrested.
The directions came during the hearing of a plea filed by advocate Prashant Manchanda, who alleged that parts of North Campus had been taken over by certain individuals on Wednesday and that teachers and students had been assaulted.
He also claimed that he had received messages alleging the use of firearms on the campus. These allegations were made before the court and were not independently established in the proceedings.
The court reiterated that Delhi University and the police must take measures to ensure compliance with the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations and directions issued by the High Court and Supreme Court governing student elections.
The final provisional list released after scrutiny and withdrawal of nominations has seven candidates for president, five for vice-president, four for secretary and four for joint secretary.
The ABVP has fielded Yash Dabas for president, Ishu Maurya for vice-president, Riya Chhawadi for secretary and Lakshya Raj Singh for joint secretary.
The NSUI candidates are Vijay Shankar Meena for president, Vir Chatrath for vice-president, Namrata Chaudhary for secretary and Gopal Choudhary for joint secretary.
The AISA-SFI alliance has nominated Ananya Raturi for president, Akshat Shikhar for vice-president, Stanzin Deskyong for secretary and B Parijaat for joint secretary.
With polling concluding, attention now turns to turnout and the September 19 counting, against the backdrop of the High Court's directions for strict adherence to election norms.
