AIIA, Territorial Army join hands to plant 10,000 Ashwagandha saplings in Delhi’s Aravallis

New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, and the 132 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) ECO RAJPUT have launched an initiative to plant and scientifically monitor 10,000 Ashwagandha saplings at the Terriers Herbal Garden in Bhatti Mines, South Delhi, bringing medicinal plant research into an ongoing ecological restoration effort in the Aravalli landscape, said officials from the Ministry today.
The initiative, launched on September 24, will study the growth and adaptation of Withania somnifera under the local climatic and environmental conditions of the Southern Ridge. The plants will be regularly observed and documented as part of the research programme.
According to the Ayush, the collaboration combines AIIA’s expertise in Ayurveda and medicinal plant research with the Territorial Army’s experience in plantation, biodiversity conservation and restoration of degraded areas.
AIIA Director Pradeep Kumar Prajapati said the initiative would help connect traditional knowledge of medicinal plants with scientific research and ecological restoration.
“Ashwagandha is an important medicinal plant of Ayurveda, and its systematic cultivation, conservation and scientific documentation can contribute to both knowledge generation and biodiversity conservation,” Prajapati said.
The project is being implemented at Bhatti Mines, an area of the Southern Ridge that has witnessed ecological degradation due to mining. The Territorial Army’s ECO RAJPUT has been involved in plantation and restoration activities in the area.
The Terriers Herbal Garden already has around 200 species of medicinal and Ayurvedic significance, including Parijata, Amla and Aloe Vera. AIIA has been providing technical support for the garden’s maintenance and scientific management.
The plantation programme will also involve faculty members and PhD scholars from the institute, along with personnel of the Territorial Army. Its implementation is being coordinated by Major Jai Singh Shekhawat of ECO RAJPUT and Major Ashish Kumar of AIIA.
The initiative aims to generate field-based data on Ashwagandha while supporting biodiversity conservation and restoration of the green landscape in the Aravallis.
