Delhi CM inaugurates Swachh Yamuna Prahari initiative supported by BJP state unit

New Delhi, Oct 1 (UNI) The Delhi Government on Thursday launched the Swachh Yamuna Prahari Campaign, inaugurated by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in Delhi University’s North Campus, as part of the government’s efforts towards cleaning and conservation of the river, with the organisational support of the BJP’s state unit.
Delhi BJP President Harsh Malhotra and Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh were also present on the occasion, along with DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh and others.
As the campaign commenced on Thursday, students from various colleges also took a pledge to become Yamuna Praharis and contribute to the cleanliness campaign.
CM Gupta registered herself on the Swachh Yamuna Prahari App with a pledge to keep the Yamuna clean and safe, while the Delhi government also launched a website, meriyamuna.in, where people of Delhi can register themselves and become Swachh Yamuna Praharis.
Speaking on the occasion, Delhi BJP chief Harsh Malhotra said that over the past 12 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not only spoken about development, but the country has also witnessed unprecedented development works.
Whether it is national highways, railway electrification, the rural road scheme or several other initiatives, the PM Modi has simultaneously given special attention to preserving and promoting India’s culture, one of the world’s oldest and richest cultures, he added.
Malhotra said that Clean Ganga does not merely mean cleaning the Ganga river, adding that India’s life-giving rivers are symbols of our culture, and all rivers should be clean and pristine.
The Yamuna, after originating in Uttarakhand, passes through the plains of Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh before reaching the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, and its condition becomes extremely concerning along the way, he said, adding that the river flows for approximately 33 kilometres through Delhi, and it is to address this concern that everyone has gathered here.
He informed that Modi government had made approximately Rs 3,500 crore available for cleaning the Yamuna, but during the previous government’s tenure, these funds could not be translated into the desired results, and allegations of corruption also emerged in this regard.
He said that dirty water from 22 major sewage drains directly enter Yamuna, and now tenders have already been issued for setting up sewage treatment plants at the outlets of these drains, while construction has begun at 12 of the 22 locations.
“We are fully committed to working towards making the Yamuna clean, pristine and pollution-free for the people of Delhi by 2029,” he assured.
CM Gupta stated that keeping the Yamuna clean is a shared responsibility of both the Delhi Government and the people. She accused that previous governments of making mistakes, and not adopting any serious action or comprehensive action plan for cleaning the river.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh said that on October 18, a cleanliness drive will be conducted, and waste like polythene bags etc lying along the banks of the Yamuna will be cleared.
