Gender lens crucial to understanding climate vulnerability, justice: Experts

New Delhi, Oct 8 (UNI) Climate change is deepening existing inequalities, with women facing disproportionate impacts on livelihoods, education and access to resources, experts said at the launch of a new volume examining the gender dimensions of climate vulnerability and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Chintan Research Foundation (CRF) launched “Gendering Climate Futures: Power, Finance, and Justice in a Warming World” in New Delhi on Wednesday. Edited by Kalyani Shukla and Sandra Kurian, the volume examines gender, climate vulnerability, access to resources, agency, finance and participation in the just transition, with a focus on South Asia and India.
Opening the event, CRF President Shishir Priyadarshi said climate change should not be viewed only as an environmental crisis, as it also affects livelihoods, access, representation, and power. He highlighted disruptions to women’s livelihoods and education and stressed the importance of land ownership in enabling women to access credit and invest in climate resilience.
“Understanding how climate change impacts gender helps us better understand vulnerability, adaptation and, ultimately, justice,” he said, calling for gender concerns to be placed at the centre of climate policy.
A panel discussion following the launch highlighted the need to improve women’s access to land, finance, technology, social protection and decision-making. The panellists also flagged institutional barriers to incorporating gender into climate and employment policies.
Greater availability of gender-disaggregated data was identified as important for assessing the social and economic effects of climate change and designing targeted policies. Experts also called for gender considerations to be incorporated at the design stage of climate and development programmes rather than treated as an afterthought.
The discussion stressed that women should be recognised not only as vulnerable groups but also as agents and leaders in the climate transition.
