NDMC turns wet waste into compost, hands over 1,000 kg to Lok Niwas

New Delhi, Oct 8 (UNI) The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), on Thursday, handed over 1,000 kg of organic compost to Lok Niwas, the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, as part of its efforts to process wet and horticulture waste locally and reduce the amount sent for disposal.
Officials said NDMC produced the compost at its decentralised composting facility at the Hi-Tech Nursery on Madhu Limaye Marg, Chanakyapuri. The facility processes locally generated wet and horticulture waste, with mature compost produced in about two to three months.
The decentralised system treats organic waste closer to where it is generated, reducing the need to transport it to distant disposal sites. The compost is then used as a resource instead of being sent for disposal.
The handover was attended by NDMC Advisor (SWM) Rajiv Kumar Jain and SMO Ankita Rai, along with representatives of Lok Niwas.
The facility was also visited by the Delhi Lieutenant Governor on September 25 during a review of NDMC’s waste-management and cleanliness initiatives.
The civic body has also expanded the use of compost in schools under the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign. Officials said 1,250 kg of compost has so far been distributed among 11 schools, with the initiative aimed at promoting source segregation and composting among students and school communities.
NDMC plans to distribute another 3,000 kg of compost among 30 schools, according to officials. The programme is intended to increase awareness about decentralised waste processing and the conversion of organic waste into a usable resource.
NDMC officials said decentralised composting can help reduce the volume of organic waste requiring transportation and final disposal while supporting more sustainable waste management practices.
