Investment in children has highest multiplier effect for nation, say speakers

Arushi Thapa
New Delhi, Nov 3 (UNI) Investment in children and inculcation of strong values are essential for building a developed and prosperous nation, speakers said at a pre-Children’s Day event organised by Mothers Advocating Values (MAV) here.
The speakers stressed that economic growth, technological advancement and academic achievements alone cannot ensure a strong nation unless children are nurtured into responsible, compassionate and ethical citizens.
The event, held at Lady Irwin Senior Secondary School under the theme ‘Values Empowered Youth for a Viksit Bharat’, brought together representatives from governance, education, national security, sports and civil society to deliberate on the role of families, schools and institutions in shaping the next generation.
Speakers stressed that economic and technological progress must be complemented by character-building, empathy, integrity and social responsibility. They also proposed introducing a ‘Values Filter’ across education, governance, media and business to assess the impact of institutional decisions and public messaging on children.
Lata Gupta, Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, said mothers played a crucial role in shaping children's character, discipline and compassion, adding that women's empowerment has a multiplier effect on families and society.
"Mothers are a child’s first teachers, and by instilling values in their children, they help shape responsible citizens and, ultimately, the nation’s future,” she said.
The discussions reinforced a common conviction: building a developed India must begin with building responsible Indians. Safeguarding the values of the next generation cannot remain the responsibility of parents and schools alone. It requires a broader societal commitment in which institutions, leaders and citizens recognise their collective responsibility for the environment in which children grow.
Former Uttar Pradesh Inspector General of Police Shantanu Mukharji, who also served as National Security Adviser to the Prime Minister of Mauritius, said, "National strength rested on the character of its citizens, urging young people to pursue their ambitions with integrity and a sense of duty."
“Dream big, but remain conscious of your responsibilities towards society and the country,” he said.
Indian motorsport rally driver Baani Yadav urged girls to challenge stereotypes and pursue their dreams with confidence, while educationist Minakshi Khurana emphasised that education must go beyond academic achievements and nurture empathy, sensitivity and responsibility.
The programme also featured an NCC march past, a poster-making competition, poetry recitations and a pledge by students to uphold integrity, kindness and respect.UNI ATP AAB
