Sardar Patel’s legacy reminds us that national interest must prevail over personal considerations: Delhi Assembly Speaker

New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Friday paid floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on the eve of his 151st birth anniversary, recalling his pivotal role in India's freedom struggle and the integration of more than 550 princely states into the Indian Union.
“Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel demonstrated that national unity demands courage, sacrifice and an unwavering commitment to the country. His life reminds us that the interests of the nation must always prevail over personal considerations,” Gupta said while addressing officials at the Delhi Legislative Assembly.
On the occasion, the Speaker administered the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge to Assembly officials, reaffirming their collective commitment to protecting the unity, integrity and security of the country.
Highlighting Patel's contribution to nation-building after Independence, Gupta said the integration of more than 550 princely states was one of the most significant achievements in India's post-Independence history. His administrative foresight, political determination and ability to combine negotiations with firm action helped transform a fragmented political landscape into a united nation, he said.
Referring to the integration of Hyderabad, Gupta said Patel's resolve at a crucial juncture demonstrated his uncompromising commitment to India's territorial integrity. He also recalled Patel's leadership during the 1928 Bardoli Satyagraha, which established him as a formidable organiser of non-violent resistance and earned him the title of 'Sardar'.
Emphasising Patel's personal integrity, simplicity and commitment to public service, Gupta said that despite holding the highest positions in the government, he remained guided by discipline, restraint and a deep sense of national duty.
Patel's legacy, he said, extended beyond the political integration of the country and continued to serve as an enduring example of responsible leadership, collective resolve and public accountability.
Calling upon Assembly officials to draw inspiration from Patel's life, Gupta stressed that national unity should not remain confined to ceremonial observances and pledges but must be reflected in honesty, dedication and responsibility in everyday public service.
He said upholding these values would be the most meaningful tribute to the country's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, widely remembered as the architect of India's political integration. Chief Whip of the ruling party Abhay Verma and MLA Ajay Mahawar were also present on the occasion. UNI XC CDS
