Nirmala Sitharaman heads to Singapore, focus on investment, trade and financial ties

New Delhi, Oct 9 (UNI) union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is visiting Singapore from October 9 to 11 to strengthen bilateral economic ties and attract fresh investments into India. The visit will include meetings with Singapore’s top political leadership, global institutional investors, financial institutions and business leaders.
During her three-day visit, Sitharaman is scheduled to meet Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Ministry of Finance said in a statement.
The discussions will focus on advancing the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and implementing outcomes of the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable (ISMR).
Key areas of cooperation include trade and investment, digital financial connectivity, capital markets, taxation, semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, skill development and aviation, it added.
Singapore remains India’s largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI), with cumulative inflows of around $194.68 billion between April 2000 and March 2026. Singapore-based institutional investors, including GIC and Temasek, also have substantial investments across various sectors of the Indian economy.
As part of efforts to attract investment, the Finance Minister will participate in a roundtable with hedge fund and portfolio fund managers, along with a series of government-to-business (G2B) meetings. The engagements will bring together Singaporean and international investors, financial institutions and business leaders to discuss India's growth prospects, investment opportunities and the evolving global economic and financial environment.
Sitharaman will also hold one-to-one meetings with senior executives of prominent global investment firms, banks, healthcare companies and financial institutions.
The scheduled engagements include meetings with the chief executives of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC), Temasek Holdings, DBS Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, British International Investment (BII), IHH Healthcare, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group's Asia-Pacific operations, B Capital and HPS Investment Partners.
She will also meet the chairperson of Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB), a director on the board of Mitsui & Co., and the executive chairman and founding partner of TPG.
India is looking to leverage platforms such as the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF) and Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) to expand Singaporean participation in the country's investment landscape.
These platforms could offer additional avenues for Singaporean capital to flow into India through investment funds and other financial vehicles.
The Ministry of Finance, in coordination with other ministries and industry bodies, will facilitate links between interested Singaporean investors and Indian companies, financial institutions and state governments.
The government also plans to provide support to investors to help translate identified opportunities into concrete investments.
The visit highlights India's efforts to build on its strategic relationship with Singapore and strengthen economic cooperation, with a focus on mobilising investments, expanding business partnerships and delivering tangible outcomes across key sectors.
