Children’s hospital in Delhi to add 500 beds, ICU capacity to rise fivefold: Health Ministry

New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital (KSCH) is set to add 500 beds, taking its capacity from 394 to 894, as part of an ongoing expansion to strengthen paediatric care, officials from the Health Ministry said on Monday.
The expansion will also increase the hospital’s ICU capacity from 40 to 200 beds and the number of operation theatres from four to 12, according to the Health Ministry. Construction work on the KSCH campus is underway.
The ministry said the expansion is intended to increase capacity for tertiary and super-speciality paediatric care as well as undergraduate, postgraduate and super-speciality medical training.
During the review, union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda stressed that the expansion of LHMC and its associated hospitals should be planned around patient needs and future healthcare requirements, the ministry said in a statement.
He also called for construction quality to be closely monitored and project timelines to be followed. Issues requiring approvals and clearances should be flagged to the ministry in time.
Nadda further stressed that recruitment of doctors, nurses and other healthcare staff should progress alongside infrastructure expansion, the ministry said.
The minister also called for a long-term master plan for LHMC and its associated hospitals, combining immediate requirements with phased development over the coming decades. He suggested exploring private-sector expertise and partnerships for major projects wherever appropriate, according to the ministry.
Nadda also visited LHMC’s Skill Lab, which provides simulation-based training for medical students and postgraduate trainees. The facility has dedicated areas for intensive care, surgery, obstetrics, neonatal care, trauma, ENT, and ophthalmology.
