Road inspection row sparks AAP-BJP clash, Verma denies AAP version of incident

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) A road inspection in west Delhi’s Vikaspuri turned into a political confrontation on Sunday after the AAP alleged that PWD Minister Parvesh Verma slapped a youth who was recording the proceedings, prompting the BJP leader to hit back with allegations of corruption and obstruction against the opposition party.
A video circulated by AAP leaders purportedly shows Verma in a heated exchange with Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh before striking the man who was recording the incident. The AAP has demanded police action against the minister.
Jarnail Singh alleged that he had taken Verma to the spot to show him the poor condition of the road. “I thought he would inspect the road, check the quality, and perhaps take action against the PWD officials. Instead, he slapped the person who was recording the incident,” Singh said.
The youth, identified as Sahib Singh, alleged that he was livestreaming the inspection when Verma took his phone and slapped him. “To stop the ongoing live stream, Parvesh Verma snatched the phone from my hand, raised his hand at me and slapped me,” he told reporters. He said he had filed a police complaint.
Verma, however, rejected the AAP’s version of the episode and accused the youth of provoking the confrontation. In a video statement on the incident, the minister alleged that Jarnail Singh had been asking PWD engineers for a “commission” from the contractor and claimed that engineers had filed a police complaint over the matter.
The PWD minister also alleged that Singh’s supporters were deliberately interfering with the road work and said the MLA had reached the site after being informed about his inspection.
“I myself called the MLA, Jarnail Singh, three times. I waited for him for 45 minutes,” Verma said, adding that the MLA “started misbehaving” after reaching the site. The minister further claimed that one of the MLA’s workers abused his family and said, “I did what any person would do in anger.”
Verma said the road was being constructed after nearly 15 years and accused the AAP of being unhappy with the Delhi government’s roadwork. He said the quality of the project could be independently examined through a third-party audit and core-cutting tests.
He also warned that obstruction of government work or alleged demands for commissions from officials would not be tolerated.
The AAP, meanwhile, escalated the issue. Senior leader Saurabh Bhardwaj accused Verma of assaulting the youth while surrounded by security personnel, while former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal posted, “Arrest the minister,” and said he would visit the area.
Atishi, Leader of Opposition in Delhi Assembly, also demanded action against Verma, accusing him of responding to questions over road quality with “arrogance”.
