Abhishek Banerjee accuses BJP of trying to silence Opposition, vows to remain fearless

New Delhi, Oct 31 (UNI) Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Saturday accused the BJP of seeking to silence the Opposition and create an atmosphere in which questioning the ruling party is increasingly being treated as an act of defiance, asserting that he would neither be intimidated nor pressured into submission.
In a strongly worded post on his WhatsApp channel, Banerjee took a swipe at the BJP and its supporters, saying they appeared frustrated by his ability to take on the ruling party politically while remaining a free citizen.
“Their biggest question is how I can politically take on the BJP so fiercely and still remain a free citizen?” he remarked, suggesting that the very idea of openly challenging the BJP without facing imprisonment had become a source of astonishment for its supporters.
The Trinamool leader said the country's political discourse had reached a disturbing stage where criticism of the BJP was being treated almost like “blasphemy”. What should be regarded as an ordinary and essential feature of a functioning democracy, he argued, was now being portrayed as an extraordinary act of defiance.
“That is how distorted our political discourse has become. What should be perfectly normal in a democracy is now seen as an extraordinary act of defiance. This is the dangerous new normal,” Banerjee said.
Accusing the BJP of wanting an Opposition that had been stripped of its voice, courage and capacity to question those in power, he alleged that the party's political ambitions in West Bengal extended beyond weakening its rivals to creating an “opposition-free political landscape”.
“In Bengal, its ambition is even more brazen: AN OPPOSITION-FREE POLITICAL LANDSCAPE!” he declared, taking direct aim at the BJP's political approach in the state, where the Trinamool Congress remains its principal electoral rival.
Reaffirming his determination to continue challenging the BJP, Banerjee maintained that dissent and questioning those in authority were fundamental democratic rights that no ruling establishment could take away.
“Dissent is not a crime. Challenging those in power is not blasphemy. And democracy is not the private property of the ruling party,” he asserted.
Making it clear that he would continue to raise questions whenever he believed the interests of West Bengal and the country were at stake, Banerjee said: “I will neither be intimidated into silence nor pressured into submission. My voice will remain fearless, independent and uncompromising.”
His remarks come against the backdrop of an increasingly confrontational political relationship between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP in West Bengal. The two parties have repeatedly accused each other of political intimidation, while disputes over the functioning of central investigative agencies and democratic institutions have remained prominent in their political exchanges.
Banerjee's latest attack seeks to place the confrontation within a wider debate over the freedom to dissent and the legitimacy of political opposition, with the Trinamool leadership projecting its resistance to the BJP as a defence of democratic rights and the space available to those who challenge the ruling establishment.
