'First exclusion, now segregation’: Congress questions ECI’s ‘Mark VIP’ voter tagging

New Delhi, Sep 25 (UNI) The Congress today intensified its confrontation with the Election Commission over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, questioning the reported introduction of a “Mark VIP” feature in the application used by Booth Level Officers (BLOs) and demanding to know why some voters should receive special treatment in the electoral-roll verification process.
Addressing a press conference here, AICC Media and Publicity Department chairman and Rajya Sabha MP Pawan Khera questioned who authorised the feature and what legal or administrative basis existed for categorising certain electors as “VIP”. His remarks followed a report by a national daily that the BLO App had been updated to include a “Mark VIP” facility during the SIR exercise. The Apple App Store records the change with the description “mark VIP elector related changes”, while the app’s version history indicates that the feature was added in an update dated August 4.
“First it was exclusion and now it is segregation,” Khera said, alleging that the Election Commission was creating a distinction between ordinary voters and those deemed prominent. “First, they deleted 13.8 crore voters, now the ECI is busy segregating voters. On whose instructions?” he asked, describing SIR as having been transformed into “Segregation of Indian Rolls”.
