CPI(M) chief MA Baby accuses Modi Govt of authoritarianism over crackdown on opposition protest

New Delhi, Oct 7 (UNI) CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby on Wednesday accused the Narendra Modi government of “naked authoritarianism” and contempt for democratic rights, after Opposition MPs protesting against the Election Commission’s functioning were prevented from proceeding with their demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
In a post on social media platform X, Baby said the denial of Opposition MPs’ “right to raise their voices at Jantar Mantar, a historic centre of people’s struggles,” reflected what he described as the government’s authoritarian approach towards dissent.
“The attempt to crush dissent by unleashing a reign of terror in the national capital will not succeed,” Baby said, alleging that the government was using the police and central forces to suppress peaceful protests and “protect Gyanesh Kumar”, the Chief Election Commissioner.
