MCD, Delhi government inspect South Delhi pollution hotspots ahead of winter

New Delhi, Oct 10 (UNI) Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar and Delhi Urban Development Secretary Vivek Pandey on Saturday inspected pollution hotspots and major construction sites in South Delhi to review measures aimed at curbing air pollution before the winter.
The officials visited pollution hotspots in R.K. Puram and the IIT Delhi area, where they assessed dust-control measures and reviewed efforts by civic and government agencies to address sources of pollution.
They also inspected construction sites in Sarojini Nagar and along Ring Road to examine compliance with dust mitigation norms, the civic body said in a statement.
Officials from the Delhi administration, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Delhi Development Authority (DDA), Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), Delhi Jal Board (DJB) and Delhi Traffic Police (DTP) participated in the inspection, along with MCD's South Zone officials.
During the visit, the team reviewed the deployment of anti-smog guns, water sprinklers and mechanical road sweeping machines at identified pollution hotspots.
Khirwar directed departments to improve coordination and strengthen dust-control measures at construction sites. He also instructed officials to take action against agencies and repeat violators found flouting pollution-control norms.
According to the press statement, following the inspection, officials held a review meeting at the MCD South Zone office.
South Zone Deputy Commissioner Shashwat Saurabh briefed the Urban Development Secretary on pollution levels, key emission sources and mitigation measures being implemented across the zone.
Pandey reviewed the action taken by various agencies and stressed the need for closer coordination, continuous monitoring and timely intervention at pollution hotspots.
The inspection team also visited areas near IIT Delhi and a nearby petrol pump, where officials were instructed to improve pedestrian access through regular anti-encroachment drives. Departments were also asked to intensify the cleaning of roads, footpaths and green belts ahead of the winter season, when air quality in the capital typically deteriorates.
