Congress Working Committee to meet amid EC controversy; Kharge demands resignation of Chief Election Commissioner

New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) The Congress Working Committee (CWC) will convene on Tuesday to address the growing controversy surrounding the Election Commission of India. Congress president and Rajya Sabha Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge declared the party’s commitment to “fight this seriously” and called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Kharge explained that the CWC meeting was called to discuss the issue and gather suggestions from the party’s top decision-making body. “I have called a Working Committee meeting for tomorrow, where we will discuss the issue and all members will provide their views,” he said.
Kharge emphasized the gravity of the matter, stating, “This issue concerns the entire country, the existence of our democracy, and the survival of our nation. That is why we are very serious about this.”
The meeting takes place amid escalating tensions between the Congress and the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and allegations about the poll panel’s impartiality and functioning. The Congress has criticized the revision exercise and demanded higher accountability from the Commission.
Kharge cited allegations from former Kerala Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson, who claimed that Gyanesh Kumar had urged him to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha election as a BJP candidate from Pathanamthitta—a suggestion Thomson reportedly declined. The claim remains unverified, and Kumar has not publicly commented on it.
“Even the Election Commission’s own people have exposed them. A former Kerala Chief Secretary has said the CEC himself told him to contest elections, signaling that he promotes BJP’s ideology and acts as their worker,” Kharge alleged.
He urged Kumar’s resignation and vowed continued action even after the Chief Election Commissioner steps down. “Gyanesh Kumar should resign. We will take action against him even after his resignation,” Kharge said.
The controversy has intensified over the past weeks, fueled by opposition concerns about deletions in the electoral rolls during the SIR process and the Election Commission’s role in voter eligibility. The Commission defends the revision as a constitutional mandate and denies any political bias.
Meanwhile, the BJP and the government have dismissed Congress’s allegations, insisting that constitutional institutions must remain free from political attacks.
The CWC is expected to outline Congress’s strategy to challenge the Election Commission and the SIR exercise, with Kharge signaling a sustained political and institutional campaign to protect India’s electoral democracy. UNI SKA AAB
