Rahul Gandhi slams Delhi BJP Government over minister’s slap video

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the BJP government in Delhi over a video purportedly showing PWD Minister Parvesh Verma slapping a young man during a road inspection in Tilak Nagar.
In a social media post, Gandhi alleged that the young man’s only “crime” was that he was recording the proceedings while a portion of the road was being dug up in front of the minister.
“A BJP minister in the Delhi government is seen slapping a young man in a video. His crime? He was making a video. A road was being dug up in front of the minister, and he had a camera in his hand,” Gandhi said.
“This is the face of a power that no longer fears the voter,” he added.
Gandhi broadened his attack to accuse those in power of responding to questions with coercion rather than accountability.
“Ask a question on the street — a slap. Ask a question about paper leaks — a lathi charge. Ask a question in Parliament — the mic is switched off,” he said.
The controversy followed the circulation of a video on social media that appeared to show Verma pushing away a man’s mobile phone before allegedly slapping him during a heated exchange at a road inspection in Tilak Nagar. The incident took place in the presence of AAP MLA Jarnail Singh, who had raised questions over the quality of newly laid roadwork.
Delhi Police received a complaint from the man, identified as Saheb Singh, and said the facts were being verified. Gandhi also linked the episode to his allegations of electoral irregularities, arguing that what he termed “vote theft” had consequences extending beyond election results.
“Vote theft buys this — not just the result, but the arrogance that follows,” Gandhi said.
“A government that takes victory for granted does not need your consent — it needs your silence and blind devotion,” he added.
Verma has disputed the version put forward by his political opponents, maintaining that the viral video did not capture the full context of the confrontation.
He alleged that AAP workers at the site abused him and his family and said he reacted “in the heat of the moment”.
The Delhi minister also accused Jarnail Singh of pressuring Public Works Department engineers over the road project and alleged that the MLA had sought a commission from the contractor.
Verma said the quality of the roadwork would be independently examined, including through core-cutting tests. The incident has since intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and AAP in Delhi, with AAP leaders demanding action against the minister.
The police complaint and competing allegations by the two sides have added to the controversy surrounding the video and the circumstances in which it was recorded.
