Delhi CM calls Oppn's EC allegations baseless, demands treason cases against Rahul, leaders

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday launched a sharp attack on the Opposition over its allegations against the Election Commission, accusing its leaders of attempting to undermine public confidence in constitutional institutions and demanding that cases of treason be registered against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders.
Gupta said questioning the electoral process whenever election results did not go in the Opposition's favour was neither appropriate nor in the national interest, and accused the Opposition of diverting public attention from development and its own failures by creating unnecessary controversies.
Addressing reporters at Janseva Sadan, the Chief Minister said political parties had every right to question the functioning of democratic institutions, but such criticism must be based on facts and raised through constitutional and legal channels.
“Everyone has the right to ask questions in a democracy, but such questions should be based on facts. Merely making political allegations and damaging the credibility of a constitutional institution is not appropriate,” she said.
Taking aim at Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders, Gupta said their statements and activities were creating an atmosphere of distrust in the country's electoral system.
“The kind of activities being carried out by Rahul Gandhi and other Opposition leaders, and the kind of statements they are making, are, in my view, no less than treason. Cases of treason should be registered against them,” she said.
The Chief Minister said the Opposition was attempting to mislead people at a time when the country was progressing on the path of development and governments were undertaking several initiatives in the public interest.
Instead of creating doubts about constitutional institutions, she said, Opposition parties should present their development models, policies and achievements before the electorate.
Questioning the Opposition's criticism of the Election Commission, Gupta asked whether the poll body had functioned with the same degree of transparency during its tenure in power.
She said the Commission had placed its decisions and procedures before the public and clarified that the decisions relating to the electoral roll revision process had been taken unanimously.
“It is not appropriate for the Opposition to create a baseless controversy on the basis of an article published in just one newspaper,” she said.
The Chief Minister also referred to the controversy surrounding Form-6, used for registration of new voters, and said the Election Commission had clarified that the original form remained unchanged.
She said a separate declaration linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process had been added alongside the existing form, and both were available on the Commission's citizen services portal.
Gupta said the revision of electoral rolls was a regular exercise intended to ensure that eligible voters remained on the lists while entries that had become invalid due to death, relocation, duplication or other reasons were verified and corrected.
Defending the process, she said the removal of duplicate and ineligible entries was necessary to maintain the accuracy of electoral rolls.
On the Opposition's allegations of “vote chori”, Gupta questioned why political leaders were objecting to the verification of names of deceased persons, duplicate entries and those who no longer existed at the addresses recorded in the electoral rolls.
She said the objective of the exercise was to ensure that genuine voters were not deprived of their voting rights while ineligible entries were removed in accordance with prescribed procedures.
The Chief Minister said the SIR process also provided for verification, claims and objections, allowing voters to raise concerns regarding their entries.
She urged the Opposition to raise specific objections supported by facts rather than making sweeping allegations against the electoral system.
Referring to the BJP's victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Gupta questioned why the Opposition had not raised similar concerns about the Election Commission's credibility at that time.
She said political parties should not question the electoral system merely because election results did not match their expectations.
“You may spread as much false propaganda as you want to mislead the people, but the people are watching everything. The people will answer each and every point. Lies have no legs,” she said.
Gupta said the responsibility of maintaining public trust in the electoral process rested with all political parties and leaders.
She maintained that the Election Commission was working to protect the rights of eligible voters and make electoral rolls more accurate and up to date.
“In a democracy, the people are supreme,” she said, adding that voters ultimately make their decisions on the basis of facts, work and policies.
