Rahul Gandhi renews Modi debate challenge, asks PM to face questions on foreign links and US trade deal

New Delhi, Nov 3 (UNI) Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday renewed his challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage in an open, face-to-face debate, declaring that 24 hours had passed since he first issued the challenge and urging him to come forward to answer questions on alleged foreign connections, national interest and key government decisions.
In a pointed post on social media platform X, Rahul said the Prime Minister could choose any venue and appoint anyone to moderate the proposed debate, even suggesting that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat could act as the judge. He proposed that the discussion take place in the presence of the media and the country's youth, allowing both leaders to present their arguments and respond to questions.
"It's been 24 hours since I challenged you, Modi ji. You say the Opposition is anti-national. Choose any stage, any venue, and debate me on this – Who is anti-national? Who has connections with foreign forces? And what is the nature of those connections?" Rahul wrote, adding, "Let's do this as soon as possible. Daro mat!"
The Congress leader also sought to expand the proposed debate to cover a wider range of political and economic issues, including the state of India's financial system, the circumstances surrounding the US trade deal, the speed with which it was negotiated and the alleged absence of consultation with the union Cabinet. He also flagged the Adani case and the Epstein controversy as subjects requiring public scrutiny.
"We'll discuss all of them openly. Let the truth come out. Let everything be crystal clear," he said.
Rahul's renewed challenge comes against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter confrontation between the Congress and the BJP over allegations of foreign influence, national security and the government's handling of sensitive economic and political matters. The exchange reflects the Opposition's attempt to turn questions of national interest and transparency into a wider political debate, while the ruling party has repeatedly accused the Congress of undermining national interests.
The Leader of the Opposition also invoked the numerous defamation cases filed against him, claiming that around 45 such cases were pending against him over various issues. He questioned why no defamation proceedings had been initiated over his specific allegations concerning foreign connections and challenged the Prime Minister to file a case if he considered the remarks defamatory.
"You make allegations against me, don't you? Come forward. Everything will become clear," Rahul said. "You've filed defamation cases against me over other matters. I think there are around 45 defamation cases against me. But on this issue of the debate, on the question of foreign connections, you haven't filed a defamation case. Go ahead, file one. We'll discuss that openly too."
Blending political confrontation with a festive message, Rahul signed off his post by wishing the Prime Minister a happy Diwali: "Happy Diwali, Modi ji."
The challenge puts the ball in the Prime Minister's court, at least politically, with Rahul seeking to frame the proposed debate as an opportunity to publicly test competing claims about patriotism, foreign links, economic decision-making and accountability. Whether Modi accepts the invitation remains to be seen.
