Govt backs 210 nanomedicine projects with Rs 174 crore, says Jitendra Singh

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) The government is supporting 210 research and development projects in nanomedicine with financial assistance of Rs 174 crore, union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Sunday, underlining the potential of the emerging field in precision medicine and personalised healthcare.
Speaking at the inaugural World Congress on Nanomedicine 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan, Singh said nanomedicine could enable more targeted treatment by working at the cellular level and tailoring interventions to individual patients.
The projects supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) cover areas including targeted drug delivery, cancer treatment, infectious diseases, vaccine and nucleic-acid delivery, nano-diagnostics and imaging, regenerative medicine, wound healing, nanotoxicology and regulatory science, officials highlighted.
Singh said India was building an ecosystem around nanomedicine that extended beyond laboratory research to startups, infrastructure, technology development and regulatory support. He said programmes under BIRAC, including the Biotechnology Ignition Grant, PACE, SBIRI and BIPP, were helping translate research into commercial applications.
He also cited work on oral insulin nanoparticles, nanobots for breast cancer, precision nanoinjection and targeted breast cancer nanomedicine as areas showing the potential of the technology.
Singh said India had established a regulatory framework for nanopharmaceuticals through guidelines developed by the Department of Biotechnology, ICMR and CDSCO to assess their safety, quality and efficacy.
Describing nanomedicine as a major area of future healthcare, Singh said treatment could increasingly take into account factors such as a patient's genetic profile, lifestyle, diet and environmental exposure.
At the same time, he cautioned against excessive dependence on technology in medical practice. Artificial intelligence and nanotechnology, he said, should complement doctors' clinical judgement rather than replace the human and clinical aspects of medicine.
The World Congress, hosted by the Institute of Nano Medical Sciences at Delhi University, brought together more than 2,000 scientists, researchers and other participants. Nobel laureate Roger D. Kornberg, who chaired the congress, said nanomedicine could improve the precision of treatment while reducing toxicity, with applications in drug delivery, diagnosis, imaging and regenerative medicine.
Singh said India's expanding research base and institutional capabilities could enable the country to develop indigenous nanomedicine solutions with applications beyond healthcare.
