India will safeguard security, strategic autonomy when threatened: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi, Sep 27 (UNI) India does not seek to occupy the territory of any country but will take all necessary measures to protect its security and strategic autonomy when threatened, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Sunday, asserting that the country's commitment to peace should not be mistaken for weakness.
Addressing a Defence Conclave here, Singh said India believed in global stability and peaceful coexistence but would not compromise on its national security interests.
“India believes in peace and does not seek to occupy the territory of any country. However, peace should not be mistaken for weakness. We seek global stability, but not at the cost of our strategic autonomy. We are firmly committed to safeguarding our security and strategic autonomy when threatened,” he said.
The Defence Minister also asserted that there could be no scope for dialogue with any country that promotes terrorism against India, emphasising that nations supporting or sheltering terrorists must be made to understand that terrorism cannot be used as an instrument of state policy.
“Countries that use terrorism as an instrument of state policy or provide shelter and support to terrorists must be firmly reminded that terrorism cannot be a strategic asset for any nation,” he said.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remarks at the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting, Singh said India was fully entitled to take all necessary measures against terrorism as long as a neighbouring country continued to support it.
Underlining the importance of national unity, the Defence Minister said national security was not the sole responsibility of the armed forces but a collective responsibility of every citizen.
He called upon people to rise above divisions based on religion, caste, creed, language and region, and place national interests above personal and narrow considerations.
Describing India as a civilisational power, Singh said the country's rise was rooted in inclusive development rather than confrontation or disruption.
On defence manufacturing, the minister said India was steadily transitioning from being a major importer of military equipment to an emerging global supplier, with growing indigenous capabilities across the defence spectrum.
He said India was developing technologies ranging from aircraft and drone engines to fifth- and sixth-generation fighter jets, while expanding its domestic defence manufacturing base.
The increasing international demand for Indian missiles, radars, ammunition and defence platforms reflected growing confidence in the country's technology, quality and delivery capabilities, he said.
Emphasising the changing nature of warfare, Singh said modern conflicts were no longer confined to conventional domains and increasingly involved cyber, space, electronic and information warfare.
Artificial intelligence, drones, autonomous systems, quantum technology and hypersonic systems were also reshaping the battlefield, requiring India to develop future-ready capabilities across these domains, he said.
He said the government was addressing strategic vulnerabilities in technology, energy, data and supply chains by strengthening domestic capabilities in semiconductors and critical minerals, diversifying energy sources and enhancing energy security.
In a significant announcement, Singh said DRDO-developed technologies for conventional missile systems would be transferred to eligible Indian industries, allowing qualifying private companies to undertake production.
The move would strengthen the preparedness of the Armed Forces and facilitate timely delivery of missiles, while enabling the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to focus increasingly on research and development, he said.
Singh said India's objective was to build indigenous capabilities across the entire defence spectrum, from individual components to complete weapon systems, and develop technologies domestically rather than remain dependent on imports.
Such efforts would strengthen the country's strategic autonomy, defence preparedness and indigenous defence-industrial ecosystem, he added.UNI PWS AAB
