Kharge, Priyanka pay tribute to Manmohan Singh, recall his role in India's economic transformation

New Delhi, Sep 26 (UNI) Congress president and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday paid heartfelt tributes to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on his birth anniversary, recalling his contribution to India's nation-building, economic reforms and inclusive development.
In separate posts on social media platform X, the two Congress leaders remembered Singh as a "visionary statesman" whose economic policies transformed the country's growth trajectory and created new opportunities for millions of people.
Kharge said Singh's extraordinary contribution to nation-building would always be remembered with profound respect, highlighting his landmark economic reforms, commitment to inclusive growth and dedication to the welfare of the vulnerable sections of society.
"We remember with profound respect the extraordinary contribution of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to India's nation-building," Kharge said, describing him as "a visionary statesman" whose landmark economic reforms transformed India's growth trajectory, created new opportunities and helped lift millions out of poverty.
Recalling Singh's personal qualities and style of governance, Kharge said his humility, integrity and wisdom has defined his public life.
"He led with quiet dignity and compassion, placing inclusive growth and the welfare of the most vulnerable at the heart of governance," he said.
Kharge also highlighted the rights-based framework introduced during Singh's tenure, describing it as an enduring testament to his vision of governance and social welfare.
"The rights-based framework of his government remains an enduring testament to this vision," he said, adding that Singh's legacy of honest public service, inclusive development and transformative reforms would continue to inspire generations.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also paid homage to the former PM, remembering his contribution to India's economic progress and prosperity.
In a post in Hindi on X, she said, "On the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, I pay my respectful tributes to him."
Describing Singh as an accomplished economist and successful politician, Priyanka Gandhi said he had given extraordinary momentum to India's development and taken the country's prosperity to new heights.
"Through his visionary and inclusive economic policies, he enriched every section of society," she said, adding that his unprecedented contribution to the country's development would always be remembered.
She also paid homage to his memory, recalling his enduring contribution to India's progress.
Singh, who served as PM from 2004 to 2014, remains closely associated with the economic reforms initiated in 1991, when he was Finance Minister in the P V Narasimha Rao government.
The reforms, introduced amid a severe balance-of-payments crisis, marked a significant shift in India's economic policy through liberalisation, greater integration with the global economy and the expansion of private-sector participation.
As Prime Minister, Singh led the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government for two consecutive terms, with inclusive growth and social welfare forming important elements of its policy agenda.
His government introduced several rights-based measures, including the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, the Right to Information Act and the Right to Education Act, which sought to strengthen employment security, transparency and access to education.
Singh, widely respected for his academic background, personal integrity and understated public demeanour, passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92.
