Delhi shivers under cloudy skies as mercury stays 6 degrees below normal

New Delhi, Sep 28 (UNI) Delhi remained under generally cloudy skies on Monday, with the maximum temperature at Safdarjung settling at 28.7 degrees Celsius, six notches below normal, even as the minimum temperature rose to 23 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather office forecast a spell of very light to light rain at many places in Delhi during Monday evening to night, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of 30-40 kmph, gusting up to 50 kmph.
The maximum temperature at Safdarjung fell by 1.9 degrees Celsius over the past 24 hours, while the minimum rose by two degrees. The maximum temperature was markedly below normal by six degrees, while the minimum was 0.3 degrees below normal.
The Ridge recorded the lowest minimum temperature among Delhi stations at 18.7 degrees Celsius, which was 4.2 degrees below normal, while Palam recorded a maximum of 27.7 degrees Celsius, seven notches below normal. Ayanagar recorded the highest maximum temperature in the city at 29 degrees Celsius.
Delhi received trace rainfall between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Monday, while the Ridge recorded 2.2 mm, Palam 1 mm and Ayanagar 0.7 mm during the period.
The IMD said west-northwesterly winds at 15-20 kmph, gusting to 33 kmph at Palam around 4 pm, prevailed over Delhi during the day.
The weather is expected to turn progressively drier from Tuesday, with the IMD forecasting no rain and partly cloudy skies on September 29. The maximum temperature is likely to rise to 31-33 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is expected to remain between 21 and 23 degrees Celsius.
Mainly clear skies and dry conditions are forecast from September 30 through October 4, with the maximum temperature likely to climb to 32-35 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature is expected to remain in the range of 22-26 degrees Celsius during this period.
The IMD said the Southwest Monsoon had withdrawn from Delhi on September 23, two days ahead of its normal withdrawal date of September 25. Last year, the monsoon withdrew from the national capital on September 24.
This year's withdrawal came after the monsoon onset over Delhi on July 2, against the normal onset date of June 27. Since June 1, Delhi had recorded 728.6 mm of rainfall at Safdarjung up to September 23, against the normal 629.7 mm, representing a 16 per cent surplus.
The IMD classified the rainfall as 'normal', with the normal rainfall category covering departures between plus or minus 19 per cent.
The weather office said a Western Disturbance persists as a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies, while upper-air cyclonic circulations over East Uttar Pradesh and Northwest Uttar Pradesh and the neighbourhood also persist.
