Delhi sees heaviest October rainfall in years, mercury drops 4.7 degrees

New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI) Delhi witnessed a sharp fall in temperature, with the maximum mercury dropping by 4.7 degrees Celsius in the past 24 hours, as heavy rainfall lashed several parts of the national capital, with Safdarjung recording 61.4 mm of rain, the highest among the city's key weather stations, during the 24-hour period ending on Friday morning.
The downpour brought an unusually cool spell to the capital, pushing the maximum temperature at Safdarjung to 20.7 degrees Celsius, 10.3 degrees below normal. The minimum temperature settled at 17.2 degrees Celsius, registering a decline of two degrees over the previous 24 hours, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The maximum temperatures across Delhi remained markedly below normal, with most weather stations recording a departure of around 10 degrees or more below the seasonal average. Moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning occurred at most places, while isolated areas received heavy rainfall.
Among the weather stations, Lodi Road recorded the highest rainfall of 63.4 mm, followed by Safdarjung at 61.4 mm, Ayanagar at 55.4 mm, the Delhi University area at 53.2 mm and the Ridge at 50.3 mm during the 24 hours ending 8.30 am. Najafgarh's KVK campus recorded an even higher 89 mm.
Rainfall continued at several locations, with Rajghat recording 11.6 mm between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, while Safdarjung received another 4.2 mm.
The widespread rainfall also affected temperatures across the NCR. Palam recorded a maximum of 20.5 degrees Celsius, down 3.7 degrees, while Lodi Road and the Ridge registered maximum temperatures of 20.6 and 20.8 degrees Celsius, respectively. Noida recorded 22.3 degrees Celsius, while Gurgaon and Ghaziabad registered 20.5 and 21 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The IMD attributed the prevailing weather conditions to an active Western Disturbance, currently positioned as a cyclonic circulation over north Punjab and adjoining areas, along with associated atmospheric systems extending across parts of north India.
However, relief from the unusually cool conditions is expected to be short-lived. The weather department has forecast a gradual rise of 3-5 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures over the next five days.
For Saturday, the maximum temperature is likely to rise to 23-25 degrees Celsius, with the minimum settling between 15 and 17 degrees Celsius. The sky is expected to remain partly cloudy, with no rainfall forecast.
Temperatures are likely to climb further to 28-30 degrees Celsius on November 1 and 29-31 degrees Celsius between November 2 and 5. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain largely between 15 and 18 degrees Celsius.
The capital is likely to witness mainly clear skies from November 2 onwards, signalling a gradual return to more typical early-November weather conditions.
The IMD has advised commuters to check traffic conditions before travelling and avoid roads and low-lying areas prone to waterlogging. The rainfall and water accumulation could cause traffic disruptions and increase the risk of road accidents.
