Heavy rain likely in Haryana, Chandigarh; northwest India to turn mainly dry from Sept 30: IMD

New Delhi, Sept 28 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, while saying that most parts of northwest India were likely to experience mainly dry weather from September 30.
In its evening All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin, the IMD said isolated to scattered rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, was likely over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, Punjab and West Uttar Pradesh on September 28 and 29.
The IMD's Day-1 warning said heavy rainfall was very likely at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on September 28. Similar conditions were forecast at isolated places over Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
The weather department also forecast moderate to heavy rainfall over Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh on September 28. It warned that heavy rain could damage standing crops and horticultural plantations, cause waterlogging and inundation in low-lying areas, and disrupt road and rail traffic.
Rainfall was recorded at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday. However, the national IMD bulletin did not provide station-wise rainfall figures for Haryana, Chandigarh or Punjab for the period.
Significant rainfall was reported from neighbouring West Uttar Pradesh and the hill states. In West Uttar Pradesh, Chandpur, Dhampur and Nagina in Bijnor district recorded 9 cm each, while Bijnor received 8 cm. Nauganva Sadat in Amroha, Kanth in Moradabad and Hasanpur in Amroha recorded 7 cm each.
In Himachal Pradesh, Kangra airport recorded 7 cm. In Uttarakhand, Purola and Barkot in Uttarkashi district and Keertinagar in Tehri Garhwal recorded 7 cm each. The IMD classified rainfall at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh as heavy during the 24-hour period.
The IMD said the southwest monsoon withdrawal line continued to pass through Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Dholpur, Udaipur, Deesa and Naliya, indicating the continued withdrawal of the monsoon from northwest India.
A western disturbance was also present as a trough in the middle and upper-tropospheric westerlies.
The seven-day forecast indicates a rapid easing of rainfall across the region. Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Punjab are expected to receive fairly widespread rainfall on September 28, followed by isolated rain on September 29 and dry weather from September 30 to October 4.
Himachal Pradesh is forecast to receive scattered rainfall on September 28 and isolated rain on September 29 before turning dry from September 30. West Uttar Pradesh is also expected to remain dry from September 30.
The IMD advised farmers to move harvested produce to safer locations or cover it with tarpaulin sheets to protect it from adverse weather. It also recommended providing support to horticultural crops, vegetables and young fruit plants to minimise damage from strong winds.UNI KK AAB
