Haryana sets up 141 Safe Cradle Centres to prevent newborn abandonment

Panchkula, Oct 14 (UNI) In a bid to prevent newborns from being abandoned in potentially fatal conditions, the Haryana Government has established 141 Safe Cradle Centres across the state, urging parents unable to care for their children to surrender them safely instead of leaving them in garbage dumps, bushes, roadsides or deserted places.
The Women and Child Development Department has established the centres at childcare institutions, primary health centres, civil hospitals and other designated facilities.
"One wrong step can put an innocent child's life at risk," a government spokesperson warned on Wednesday, appealing to parents and others facing difficult circumstances to use these facilities rather than abandon children in unsafe locations.
The government has assured strict confidentiality of the identity of anyone coming forward to safely hand over a child, seeking to remove the fear and hesitation associated with surrendering children, according to press note issued wcd department here today.
The spokesperson said that in areas without a designated Safe Cradle Centre, children could be handed over to the Child Welfare Committee constituted in every district.
The initiative forms part of the state government's commitment to Empowered Women – Safe Childhood – Prosperous Haryana.
Appealing for public cooperation, the spokesperson urged citizens to ensure that no newborn or child was left abandoned or exposed to danger.
The government said the 141 centres would provide a safer alternative for vulnerable children and help strengthen the state's child protection system. Replace the unsupported direct quotationUse a tighter agency-style lead.
