Drug purchase and sale prices in UP to become public in retail shops and hospital pharmacies from Nov 1

Lucknow, Oct 6 (UNI) In a move towards providing patients with more transparent information on drug prices, the Food Safety and Drug Administration, Uttar Pradesh, has directed all retail pharmacies to set up a public website and publish essential pharmacy-related information on it.
Meanwhile, pharmacies operating within hospital premises have been directed, in the interest of patients, to display a price list based on the purchase rate and sale rate of drugs.
Implementation of this system is expected from November 1, 2026.
The directive issued on behalf of the Commissioner, Food Safety and Drug Administration, Uttar Pradesh, states that under the office order issued earlier, all retail pharmacies must create a public website and display on it the license number, appointed pharmacist, licensed premises, and stock-related details.
The information available on the website must also be updated weekly.
The department has issued special instructions regarding pharmacies operating in hospitals.
Such pharmacies located within hospital premises, where patients do not have a practical alternative for buying medicines or other medical products, will have to display a price list based on the actual purchase rate and sale rate of drugs, in the interest of patients.
The aim of this step is to increase transparency in drug prices and to let patients know at what price a particular drug was purchased and at what price it is being made available to the patient.
As per the UPFSDA directive, pharmacies will have to update this information regularly.
The department has directed regional officers to ensure compliance with this system in the pharmacies operating in their respective areas.
In other words, instead of making essential pharmacy-related information available only during inspections, a system is now being prepared to make it public for ordinary people as well.
The order clarifies that implementation of the previously issued directives is expected from November 1, 2026. For this, drug inspectors and concerned officers have been asked to ensure that pharmacies operating in their areas follow the directives.
This step is important at a time when the department is placing special emphasis on ensuring transparency in the purchase price, sale price, and the price that reaches patients.
This will allow patients to get more information while buying medicines and will help increase accountability in the pharmacy system.
The same order also mentions another important decision related to the drug trade.
Citing the order issued on 23 July 2026, it states that in view of the upcoming Navratri festival, a decision has been taken, in the interest of traders, to lift the ban on issuing new wholesale sale licenses from October 11, 2026. Concerned officers have been directed to ensure necessary action in line with this decision.
Traders in the drug business applying for new licenses are expected to get relief from this.
