UP: Govt launches Operation Safe Speed on expressways, highways

Lucknow, Oct 29 (UNI) In continuation of its effective steps to strengthen road safety and reduce fatalities in road accidents, the Traffic Directorate of the Uttar Pradesh Police conducted a special inspection campaign under 'Operation Safe Speed' on all expressways in the state.
In two phases of the campaign, 6,777 vehicles were challaned and a total fine of Rs ₹1,38,32,500 was imposed. The objective of this campaign was to effectively curb drivers violating the prescribed speed limit and to raise public awareness about safe traffic practices.
This campaign, initiated by UP DGP Rajiv Krishna and conducted through the Traffic Directorate, was conducted under the direction of Additional Director General of Police (Traffic) A. Satish Ganesh. Interceptor vehicles monitored speeding vehicles on major expressways and identified locations across the state. Action was taken against those violating the prescribed speed limit as per the rules.
The first phase of 'Operation Safe Speed' was conducted on October 26 and the second on October 28. In both phases, special inspections were conducted simultaneously on the state's expressways. The Yamuna Expressway saw the highest number of challans issued, with a total fine of ₹66,98,000, and a total fine of ₹66,98,000.
A fine of ₹24,18,000 was imposed by issuing 1,289 challans on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, ₹11,82,500 by issuing 537 challans on the Lucknow-Agra Expressway, and ₹9,40,000 by issuing 553 challans on the Ganga Expressway.
Similarly, a fine of ₹9,94,000 was imposed on the Delhi-Meerut Expressway with 497 challans, ₹6,96,000 by issuing 348 challans on the Purvanchal Expressway, ₹4,28,000 by issuing 214 challans on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, and ₹2,28,000 by issuing 103 challans on the Bundelkhand Expressway.
On the other hand, a fine of ₹1,88,000 was imposed by issuing 90 challans on the Gorakhpur-Purvanchal Link Expressway, and ₹60,000 by issuing 30 challans on the Kanpur-Varanasi Highway.
According to the Traffic Directorate, speeding is one of the major causes of road accidents. Speeding increases the risk of serious or fatal accidents. Therefore, the campaign's goal is not only to issue fines, but also to inculcate the habit of adhering to traffic rules and driving at safe speeds among drivers.
Efforts are being made to make traffic safer by monitoring all expressways in the state through interceptor vehicles and taking action against violators. This initiative by the government and police is instilling the message that drivers should adhere to the prescribed speed limit.
The police are emphasizing that drivers should not only consider their own safety but also the safety of others on the road. Following the prescribed speed limit is not only a legal obligation but also a life-saving responsibility.
