UP govt's gift to small farmers and entrepreneurs, approval of State Livestock Mission

Lucknow, Oct 27 (UNI) The Yogi Adityanath government has taken a major step towards enhancing animal husbandry for farmers and making it a source of employment and entrepreneurship for rural youth in Uttar Pradesh.
The State Livestock Mission (SLM) was approved in a cabinet meeting held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The mission aims to organize the state's livestock economy and connect it with modern technology, entrepreneurship, innovation, and the global market. It will specifically focus on small and marginal farmers, livestock farmers, and rural entrepreneurs.
Livestock and Dairy Development Minister Dharampal Singh stated that Uttar Pradesh has the largest livestock population in the country and also ranks first in milk production.
He explained that the government's focus is now on increasing livestock productivity, strengthening market systems, value addition, digital management, and livestock-based enterprises. The mission will work towards providing livestock farmers with improved breeds, technology, training, and markets.
The Minister stated that animal husbandry plays a crucial role in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's goal of doubling farmers' income. Keeping this in mind, the State Livestock Mission has been approved for the first time in the state. Under this initiative, the development and breed improvement of improved breeds such as Sahiwal, Desi, and Haryanvi will be encouraged.
He stated that financial assistance is also available for improved cow rearing. A subsidy of up to Rs 40,000 will be provided for one improved cow and up to Rs 80,000 for two cows. Goat, sheep, pig, and poultry farming will also be promoted. A scheme is also underway to provide 100 chicks each to needy families, enabling rural families to develop additional sources of income.
The State Livestock Mission will be implemented through five key sub-missions: Livestock Entrepreneurship and Startup Development, Livestock and Poultry Breed Development, Innovation and Digital Livestock, Fodder and Feed Development, and Research, Globalization, and Knowledge System Development.
These sub-missions will encourage livestock startups, strengthen fodder production, value addition of livestock products, and strengthen producer organizations and supply chains. This will aim to provide livestock farmers with better opportunities from production to marketing.
The mission will promote the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies in the livestock sector. Digital traceability will focus on improving the monitoring and quality of livestock and livestock products. Furthermore, the adoption of climate-friendly technologies will also work towards making the livestock sector more sustainable and productive.
The government aims to improve the quality of livestock products and make them accessible to larger markets. To achieve this, livestock farmers and rural youth will be trained and their skills will be developed.
The Livestock Minister stated that the State Livestock Mission will be a state-funded scheme. Grants will be provided to selected projects after completing set milestones, completing the screening committee process, and approving the PAC. The grant amount will be transferred directly to the beneficiaries' bank accounts.
Additionally, the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model will be encouraged for infrastructure development and various services in the livestock sector. The government believes this will encourage private investment and create new technology, employment, and entrepreneurship opportunities in the livestock sector.
Through the State Livestock Mission, the government aims to develop animal husbandry as a modern and organized economic sector, rather than limiting it to traditional livelihoods.
While providing new livestock-based income opportunities to small farmers and rural families, the emphasis will be on connecting youth with startups and entrepreneurship.
Preparations are underway to give the state's livestock sector a new direction through breed improvement, fodder management, digital technology, value addition, and improved market systems.
