Leh observes shutdown on 1st anniversary of Sep 24 violence

Srinagar, Sep 24 (UNI) A shutdown was observed across Leh today to mark the first anniversary of the September 24 violence in which four people were killed and nearly 100 others injured during protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards for Ladakh.
Markets remained closed and public transport stayed off the roads as people observed the anniversary. A rally was also held in Leh, with Ladakh leaders paying tribute to those killed in the firing.
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk renewed his demand for the findings of the judicial inquiry into the violence, saying the truth had remained suppressed even a year after the incident.
He alleged that unarmed civilians protesting peacefully for their rights in Ladakh were fired upon by security forces on September 24 last year, claiming that there was no firing order.
Wangchuk alleged that protesters were subsequently branded as “traitors” and subjected to torture.
“This is the day on which innocent people who asked for their rights were blindly shot, and that too without any firing order,” Wangchuk said.
Wangchuk further alleged that automatic weapons, including what he described as AK-47-like guns, were used against protesters.
He also questioned the circumstances surrounding the violence that preceded the firing, alleging that stones and vehicles had been brought to the area and that a political party office (BJP) was set ablaze.
“We did not see this in Ladakh before,” he said, alleging that the incidents were used to create a justification for opening fire.
Wangchuk claimed that three magistrates present at the scene had refused to issue firing orders, and alleged that authorities later maintained there was no requirement for such an order.
He alleged that unarmed protesters demanding their rights peacefully were fired upon indiscriminately and claimed that there had been no firing order.
A shutdown and protest rallies were also held in Kargil to mark the anniversary.
The union Home Ministry had ordered a judicial probe following last year’s violence, appointing former Supreme Court judge Justice B.S. Chauhan to conduct an “impartial inquiry”.
On Wednesday, Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena approved withdrawal of criminal cases against 20 people booked in connection with the violence.
