Haryana offers up to Rs 10,000 per acre to farmers shifting from paddy

Panchkula, Oct 23 (UNI) Haryana is offering farmers up to Rs 10,000 per acre to replace paddy with alternative crops during Kharif 2026, combining an Rs 8,000-per-acre incentive with an additional Rs 2,000 bonus for pulses, oilseeds and cotton to conserve groundwater and promote sustainable farming, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shyam Singh Rana said.
Under the Mera Pani Meri Virasat scheme, farmers who cultivated paddy during the preceding four years but have shifted to alternative crops are eligible for Rs 8,000 per acre. Those cultivating pulses, oilseeds and cotton will receive an additional Rs 2,000 per acre.
Eligible alternatives include maize, moong, arhar, urad, moth, groundnut, sesame, castor, cotton, onion, horticultural and fodder crops, and eucalyptus-based agroforestry. Farmers leaving their land fallow are also eligible for assistance.
The incentive was initially Rs 7,000 per acre and has since been increased to Rs 8,000. Farmers eligible for the scheme last year will continue to qualify this year, Rana said.
The incentive and bonus will be transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank accounts in a single instalment through Direct Benefit Transfer.
Rana said crop diversification was vital to arrest groundwater depletion, maintain soil fertility and strengthen climate-resilient agriculture. He urged farmers to adopt less water-intensive crops to protect agricultural resources and sustain farm incomes for future generations.
