Army deserter held for duping soldier in loan subsidy fraud; 12 similar cases filed in six states

Panchkula, Sep 17 (UNI) An Army deserter accused of posing as an Army personnel and an AGIF clerk has been arrested on the charges of cheating a soldier posted at Chandimandir Cantonment of Rs 10 lakh on the promise of arranging a hefty subsidy on a loan, a police official said.
The accused, identified as Sagar Guleria of Jalandhar, Punjab, was arrested in a case registered at Chandimandir Police Station. Police said 12 similar financial fraud cases have been registered against him in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Haryana.
According to Tajinder Pal Singh, in-charge of the Economic Offences Wing-1, the Army personnel lodged a complaint on May 1.
The complainant told police that Guleria stopped him near Joshi Enclave on February 6 and introduced himself as an Army personnel and an AGIF clerk. He allegedly offered to secure a subsidy of Rs 7 lakh on a Rs 10-lakh loan and Rs 15 lakh on a Rs 20-lakh loan.
Police said the accused obtained the soldier's Aadhaar and PAN cards, canteen card, salary slip and other documents through WhatsApp. He also allegedly persuaded him to share OTPs, claiming these were required to complete the online loan process.
The Rs 10-lakh loan was credited to the complainant's SBI salary account on February 9. Guleria then reportedly obtained access details for the complainant's YONO account and an OTP and transferred Rs 10 lakh to bank accounts linked to his associates, police said.
He initially promised to return the money but later purportedly began avoiding the complainant.
DCP Panchkula Aditi Singh said investigators obtained bank records relating to the transactions. The accused was produced before a court following his arrest and remanded in police custody for one day.
Moreover, the police said Guleria has also been declared a deserter from the Army. Investigators are now trying to recover the allegedly defrauded money and examine the wider network linked to the transactions.
