Fake WA message, bogus rent refund scams: 8 held in Rs 50.9 lakh cyber frauds in Haryana

Faridabad, Oct 20 (UNI) Faridabad police have arrested eight suspects in two cyber fraud cases involving Rs 50.9 lakh, including a Rs 50 lakh corporate scam carried out by impersonating a company's CMD on WhatsApp, a police official said on Tuesday. Police also froze Rs 29 lakh linked to the fraud.
Six suspects were arrested in the corporate fraud, while two others were held for allegedly duping a flat owner of Rs 90,000 through fabricated rent payment confirmations.
In the first case, a Sector 28 resident received a WhatsApp message on September 17 from a number displaying his company's CMD's photograph. The sender instructed him to transfer Rs 1 crore to a specified bank account, following which the complainant transferred Rs 50 lakh from the company's account.
Cyber Police Station Central arrested Ajay and Adnan Khan of Mumbai and Avinash, Nasir, Jayaravan and Rizwan of Gujarat.
Investigators said Ajay had established a firm, Ajay Manpower, whose bank account was passed through Nasir, Avinash and Jayaravan before being made available to fraudsters through Telegram.
Adnan allegedly facilitated the opening of the current account, while Rizwan operated it from a hotel during the fraudulent transaction.
Police froze Rs 29 lakh in the account and recovered five mobile phones. All six accused were sent to judicial custody.
In the second case, a Sector 46 resident who had advertised his flat for rent on OLX was allegedly cheated of Rs 90,000 by a caller claiming to work for the State Bank of India.
The caller purportedly offered six months' rent of Rs 90,000 and Rs 42,000 towards electricity charges in advance, sending messages falsely indicating that the money had been credited to the complainant's wife's account.
He subsequently requested a refund, claiming he would instead pay rent monthly. Without verifying the bank balance, the complainant transferred Rs 90,000 in three transactions.
Cyber Police Station NIT arrested Gopal and Shravan, both residents of Patna. Police said Gopal had provided his bank account to Shravan, and the defrauded amount was credited to that account.
Both were sent to judicial custody. Separate cases have been registered, and further investigation is underway.
