Gurugram Police arrest two for extortion bid using virtual US number

Gurugram, Oct 29 (UNI) Gurugram Police have arrested a 25-year-old man and apprehended his 15-year-old accomplice for allegedly extorting money from a liquor vend owner using a virtual foreign mobile number, exposing a scheme that allegedly used internet-based technology to conceal the caller’s identity.
The accused, identified as Sumit, a resident of Sikanderpur Bada in Gurugram district, and his minor accomplice were apprehended on October 29, within hours of the registration of a case at Farrukhnagar police station, police said.
According to the complaint, the liquor licence holder received a call at around 12.41 pm on October 25 from an unknown number. The caller claimed to be calling from America, demanded money and threatened serious consequences if the demand was not met.
Following the complaint lodged on October 28, police registered a case under Section 308(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
A team led by Sub-Inspector Lokesh Kumar of the Farrukhnagar Crime Branch used technical inputs to trace the suspects, leading to their apprehension, police said.
During preliminary interrogation, Sumit allegedly disclosed that he had obtained a virtual foreign number using information available on the internet. He and the minor allegedly planned to use the number to threaten the liquor vend owner and demand money. The minor allegedly made the call, while Sumit was supposed to collect the money if the complainant agreed to pay.
Sumit, who is a Class 10 pass-out and works as a clerk for a lawyer at the Gurugram court, is being questioned along with the minor, who studies in Class 8. Police are investigating their possible involvement in other criminal incidents and trying to recover the mobile phones and other items allegedly used in the offence.UNI KK AAB
