Haryana rolls out dedicated geriatric clinics and special care measures for sr citizens

Panchkula, Oct 1 (UNI) On the occasion of the International Day of Older Persons, Haryana Health Minister Arti Singh Rao on Thursday unveiled an expansive slate of welfare measures aimed at safeguarding the health, dignity, and wellbeing of senior citizens across the state, declaring that the government is working with the firm resolve of ensuring "Ageing with Dignity: Strengthening Care and Support Systems for Older Persons."
In a detailed briefing, Rao said the state government has instituted a series of concrete, on-the-ground interventions across all government health institutions to make healthcare more accessible, respectful, and responsive to the needs of the elderly.
To begin with, separate priority queues have been introduced at registration counters, outpatient departments, laboratory services, and medicine distribution windows, ensuring that senior citizens no longer have to endure long, physically taxing waits for medical attention.
Going a step further, dedicated geriatric clinics are now operational in hospitals, staffed and supported by trained hospital attendants who assist elderly patients through every stage of their visit, from consultation to treatment.
According to a Health Department press release issued here today, in addition to these routine facilities, the government has introduced a fixed-day outreach model under which special health check-up camps are organised on the third Friday of every month at government health institutions statewide.
During these camps, senior citizens undergo comprehensive health evaluations and receive essential medicines at no cost, removing both the financial and logistical barriers that often prevent the elderly from seeking timely care.
Rao emphasised that geriatric healthcare in Haryana is not limited to episodic camps or clinic visits. Comprehensive geriatric assessments are now being conducted at all government health facilities, enabling physicians to evaluate the physical, mental, and functional health of elderly patients in a holistic manner.
Complementing this, physiotherapy services have been made available at district civil hospitals to help older persons manage chronic pain, mobility challenges, and post-illness rehabilitation closer to home.
Recognising the importance of specialist access, especially for those living in remote areas or with limited mobility, the state has integrated digital health platforms into its geriatric care framework. Senior citizens can now consult specialist doctors through e-Sanjeevani and other telemedicine services from the comfort of their homes, a move that has significantly expanded the reach of expert medical advice without the burden of travel.
Beyond institutional reforms, the Health Minister issued a heartfelt advisory to senior citizens, urging them to embrace healthy and active lifestyles as the foundation of graceful ageing. She encouraged the elderly to consume nutritious and balanced diets, maintain cleanliness in their homes and surroundings, and engage regularly in light physical exercise suited to their capacity.
She also cautioned against the harms of tobacco, smoking, and alcohol, and stressed the importance of periodic health screenings and strict adherence to prescribed medication regimens.
Rao further called upon families and society at large to reaffirm their responsibility toward the older generation.
She said senior citizens should be actively included in family life by involving them in new activities, seeking their counsel, spending quality time with them, and sharing family traditions and histories.
She noted that enhancing the quality of life for the elderly requires not only medical care but also social inclusion, respect, and appreciation within the community.
For detailed information about the geriatric services, health camps, and specialised clinics available, senior citizens and their families have been advised to contact their nearest government hospital.
